Publisher's Summary

From Wall Street Journal best-selling author L.J. Shen comes a romantic comedy that will make you fall in love...or at least stumble your way to it, laughing.

I would say Dr. Cruz Costello is my archenemy.

But that would require acknowledging one another, which we haven’t done in more than a decade.

He’s the town’s golden child. The beloved quarterback-turned-physician.

I’m the girl who got knocked up at 16 and now works at a diner.

He is Fairhope royalty.

I get my monarch dose from tabloid gossip.

He’s well-off.

I’m...well, off.

When our siblings get engaged, Cruz’s parents invite both families to a pre-wedding cruise.

Except Cruz and I find ourselves stuck on a different ship from everyone else.

Cue 10 horrible, insufferable days at sea with a man I cannot stand.

(My fault, of course.)

But when the alcohol pours in, the secrets spill out, and I’m left with one question: Can I take another chance on love?

can't finish it

I love lj shen and have all her books on audio, but this one was just cringy.

The female narrator took weird breathing breaks, made random pauses, and everytime she ended a sentence, her voice dropped in a weird tone. It was very distracting and irritating. I couldn't make it past chapter 5.

I don't always have my hands free to read so audio is a wonderful way for me to still enjoy books, but this narrator turned me off so badly I deleted it and will be making time to read it. If I didn't like LJ Shen, I would've just deleted this title and moved on.

too many plot holes

Did she have a job before she got married at 21?
What did she study at Uni?
What do some mansions only ever have one housekeeper - is it too hard to introduce more characters?

Pulled an All Nighter!

I don’t think I have the right words to fully describe how much I loved this book! This is partly due to my foggy head from staying up all night devouring this book and partly because it was so exceptional. It was a little different from Shen’s normal work imo but no less page turning. In fact, it’s now one of my favorites. Well-developed storyline with intriguing characters, combustible chemistry, and pull-at-your-heartstrings moments throughout the book. I fell in love with this couple. Tennessee and Cruz were seemingly incompatible. They were night and day. But they fit together just right. Beautifully written. Great ending. Talented narration. Do. Not. Miss. This. One.

***edited to add…I can see where some might have an issue with Tennessee’s character as she often failed to have a backbone and constantly put up walls…here’s the thing…she was a young woman given a bad lot so far in life…she was bullied and mistreated by virtually her whole town including her family. Her son was literally the one good thing in her life. If you can’t put yourself in her shoes or find any empathy for her and the way she responds to situations given what she went through, maybe you’re the problem. Also, she has earned the right to be called Tennessee instead of Messy Nessy. Thank you.***

NEVER AGAIN!!!

I tried to give LJ Shen one more try but never again. I’ll admit I used to be a fan and liked her Vicious series and All Saints High books. I barely made it through the Boston Belles and dnf Devil Wears Black. I have never seen such a doormat and this was my reason for dnf DWB. As a southern woman I am truly appalled at the heroine and want to apologize to the entire state of Tennessee on behalf of Ms Shen. This has to be the worst story of all time and the female narrator was terrible. Sebyo was great as always and the only reason for the 2nd star. I don’t know how she gets 4-5 star reviews on any of her recent books she has zero creativity left to share. I’m done!

SADLY (IMO) NOT HER BEST

Whenever a new book comes out by L. J. Shen I try to grab it.. but I didn’t think storyline was up to her usual standard at all and, for me, it was a very disappointing listen with not much romance. It was so very annoying too which brought out the worst of my nature as I wanted to punch the gossips, the family members and the whole town for their constant negativity, criticism, putting down and insults aimed at the long-suffering heroine. Then I wanted to shake some sense into her for taking their shit, for playing into her reputation, for not having a backbone and for pushing away a good thing. Sebastian’s narration was great however Lauren’s was just ’meh’.

Worth a credit? Nope sorry, hand on heart, I can’t really recommend it.. but this is just my opinion you may love it.

Terrible

I couldn't finish. The female narrator is not palatable. I have loved all books by this author but the story line was just too unbelievable. A very flat build up to a plot that went no where for me.

LJ Shen??? Really??? EXCELLENT!!!

If you’re an LJ Shen fan, you will love this book and leave scratching your head like…wow…ha…that was LJ Shen…??

The writing and characters were excellent, even if the end felt a little rushed to wrap up the misadventures. No matter, this book was excellent!!! 5-stars.

I laughed, I cried, rolled my eyes, and I have never, in all my years of being a reader, wanted to reach into a book and be aggressive with a character as much as I did Tennessee’s sister. Argh!!! That’s how well that particular scene was written and how much you want to stand up for Tennessee, because she’s a good characterisation of a good human who deserves so much better than she receives.

And it’s easy to understand why she doesn’t know how to stand up for herself. Trauma leaves us at the mental age of maturity that it found us, until we seek help or have someone believe in us and the good they see in us that we don’t / can’t see. Then we can grow from it with the permission we all need most, our own, to be great.

All that aside, this is definitely a departure from Shen’s usual style that I felt happy for the author! Intensity is still there, but more humour than anything else, and great characters. I’ll even give York’s voice on this a pass…(he is starting to sound like a much older late 40s, 50s, or 60s guy, so, his voice isn’t working as well for the youthful characters he’s supposed to represent, lately)…he still gets the inflections right and spins a good tale!

Happy listening!

Over the top

Female narrator almost made me DNF, bit over exaggerated and much too much urgency in her voice.

Refreshing Story!

Fun and refreshing! Different from the angsty stories I’m used to (and love) from L.J. Shen but equally good and fun. Lots of good banter and witty lines. Great listen overall!

Funny and adorable

I almost gave up a few minutes into the first chapter because the female narrator was way over the top. However, I got used to her voice and I even enjoyed it for Tennessee’s character. I listened to this book in less than 24 hours. I’m getting too old to stay up until 4am listening to an audiobook, but I couldn’t help myself. Definitely worth the credit.

LJ Shen did it again….

Loved this book from beginning to end. As an avid fan of all LJ Shen, this did no disappoint. The romcom angle was a breath of fresh air and demonstrated another side to her writing. Can’t wait for the next!

Great story that made me laugh out loud

I had been anxiously awaiting the release of this audiobook and it didn't disappoint. I listened to the whole thing in one go and it's well worth the credit! I am a firm fan of L. J. Shen's books and was really looking forward to the release of this one as I have had some trouble finding an audiobook to my liking recently. The characters are great and it was especially refreshing that this book had a funny note (it wasn't too over the top though which can be annoying sometimes, so even more points for that). Especially towards the end it had all the feels and it left me really satisified having spent a credit on this audiobook. The narrators did a great job as well. I will definitely listen to this again several times.

Love LJ Shen

Another great story from this author..I love stories that aren’t your typical boy meets girl. Also love the fact that Tennessee isn’t your run of the mill “hot girl” and she is mouthy opinionated and headstrong. Their chemistry is full of sarcasm and banter. Loved the narration too!!
