About this listen
Okay, I might be seriously under-qualified for the job of Enforcer, I'll admit. The Enforcer is supposed to be a human, for starters. It's usually an ex-special forces guy with big muscles and even bigger balls, and a knack for sorting out petty squabbles between the witches and vampires and shifters in the city.
And I'm just a technically dead nail tech—an animated skeleton with a talent for illusion magic and gold gel manicures. But I've recently discovered that I can manifest some pretty big muscles of my own. I've already got the big balls, so I'm halfway there.
It's the 'sorting out petty squabbles' part that I might have trouble with. I'm usually the one to start the fights, not finish them. But a girl has got to grow up sometime.
My first job is finding a missing person—a half-pixie girl vanished from her home a week ago, and if she doesn't surface soon, the local Fae diplomat is going to raise Hell. Her father is blaming vampires, her boyfriend is pointing the finger at the local werewolves. The clock is ticking. I'm determined to find her alive, and prove to the supes of DC that I've got what it takes to keep this town on the straight-and-narrow.

Prue was a fun FMC. I liked her determination to succeed and drive to help people. She's initially depicted as 'just' a nail technician trying to fill very big shoes so it was fascinating to follow along as Ms Hignett did a slow reveal of her history. That history really made her likeable and sympathetic. Great crafting. The other characters were all just a bit different to the usual depiction of their race but solidly written onto each page. Daniel and Cindy were my favourites for the strength each displayed in trying their best to move on from traumatic pasts, and the way they added humour into so many of their interactions (I think Cindy takes the prize for best sidekick! She is defiant, supportive, quick witted, a little snarky....all rolled up into a tiny gothflower package). In fact, there were many humourous moments throughout the book and I often found myself laughing out loud.
There's a whole forbidden romance thing written into the story that had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to find out where that goes, for the political implications as well as for the hearts of those involved.
The situation with Prue's family was another draw for me. A dysfunctional family always adds complexity and potential for endless emotional interplay. I like the depth it provided to the story, moving it beyond being all light-hearted shenanigans.
The mystery plot was well done too. I can see myself happily watching over the shoulders of these characters as they work together in future books.
The narrator did an amazing job, and was Prue exactly as I saw her in my head. Her range of voices and portrayal of emotion was fantastic. It was a real pleasure listening to her.
I bought the rest of the series while part way through Bad Bones and am eager to get into the next book.
Brilliant
