A job description tells somebody what their job is. But does it tell them what great performance actually looks like?
Christine explains the thinking behind her What Success Looks Like document — Tool 17 in the Leadership Execution Toolkit — and how it turns vague expectations such as “show more initiative” or “delegate more” into clear, individual expectations.
She also explains how three Toolkit tools work together:
Tool 17 — What Success Looks Like: defines what the individual is working towards.
Tool 12 — Pre One-on-One Meeting Worksheet: gets the employee thinking about and taking ownership of their progress before the meeting.
Tool 15 — Employee Progress Journey: captures and tracks that progress afterwards.
The aim isn't another piece of paper. It's a practical management rhythm in which people understand what success looks like, reflect on their own performance, discuss it with their manager, track their progress and receive both accountability and recognition.
Because knowing what someone's job entails isn't enough. They also need to know what success looks like — and the business needs to help them get there.
