Fear and Faith
Israel Enslaved
Exodus 1:1-22, Genesis 12:2, John 13:3
As Exodus begins, God’s people are enslaved and oppressed. Yet God continues to bless them, and they continue to trust Him. When life get hard, do we trust that God cares and stand firm in our faith, or do we worry that God doesn’t care and let fear take over?
Exodus Part 1: The Great Escape
The Exodus is the foundational story of God’s people, the Jews. It formed their identity as the chosen people and powerfully illustrated God’s identity as a God who saves. The book of Exodus is filled with stories of the faith of God’s people being forged that still speak powerfully today, and from which we can learn much. However, the Exodus also foreshadowed of an even greater rescue. The Jews were saved from literal slavery and brought into a literal promised land. Hundreds of years later, Jesus would save us from spiritual slavery to sin and bring us into the spiritual promised land of heaven. So, as we walk through the book of Exodus, we’ll also take note of how this story sets the stage for Jesus coming to be our Lord and Savior.
