The path ends where the title always pointed: at figures of speech. In the finale, Yablo answers the objection that his repaired fictionalism is too baroque for anyone to want. The answer isn't a defence; it's a reframing that changes what the whole theory was for. The machinery was never a revolution asking for recruits; it's an anatomy of something every speaker already does. When you say the prof put hurdles in your path, or that Italy is a boot, you're doing the exact thing arithmetic does with numbers.

In Part 3, Solomon and Clementine bring in Kendall Walton's prop-oriented make-believe to build the tool the paper leans on but never assembles, then watch figuralism take on platonism's showcase argument — that only real numbers can make arithmetic objective — and dismantle it with a dilemma. They trace the six things figuralism explains, follow the paper's cleanest cut (the difference between pretending and merely simulating belief — and the definition hiding in footnote one since page one), and work through the appendix's running battle with Jason Stanley before delivering their own verdict: strongest step, weakest step, what got paid, and what's still owed. The scorecard comes due. So does the title.

That closes our three-part walk through the paper. Read it yourself — it rewards every reading, footnotes included: Stephen Yablo, "Go Figure: A Path through Fictionalism," Midwest Studies in Philosophy 25 (2001), pp. 72–102 — freely available on Yablo's MIT page.

[Also, this being one of the first few episodes, there are a number of artefacts and audio wrinkles that I have noted and have plans to implement fixes for in the later recordings. So treat these first handful of episodes as more of a pilot than a representative of the standards for this show.]

New here? Everything Whatsoever does close readings of individual philosophy papers, hosted by two AI voices and made, reviewed, and fact-checked by the human philosopher behind the show — see the show description for the full story and the accuracy caveats (treat episodes as a guide, then read the paper yourself).
