About this listen

Dr Cabot sits down with long-term patient and guest star, Michelle to talk about her incredible fatty liver success story. In 2000, Michelle was suddenly hospitalised with severe onset liver and kidney failure. It was a real shock to her as she had no idea she had any issues with her liver. She was severely jaundiced and low in energy with her liver enzymes being extremely elevated. The cause was never discovered, making it quite a mysterious liver disease. At the time of diagnosis, Michelle weighed around 90 kg and her diet wasn't great. The doctors recommended rest and diet changes, but a lot of the recommendations from the dietician were high in carbohydrates. As a result, Michelle put on more weight, had reflux, remained tired, had indigestion and a chronic fungal infection in her nails. When Dr Cabot first met Michelle, she tested her to see if she had the genes to predispose her to gluten intolerance and it was discovered that Michelle was indeed gluten intolerant. She was put on a diet that excluded grains and although it was hard in the beginning, has now become a way of life for her. She feels so much better in herself now.
