 Victor and Henry linger in London, but while Henry delights in learning and landscapes, Victor is consumed by his promise to create a companion for the Creature. They travel through Windsor, Oxford, and the northern lakes, where Victor’s dread and guilt deepen despite moments of beauty. Worried for his family and haunted by paranoia, Victor separates from Henry in Scotland and retreats to a desolate Orkney isle. There he repairs a hut, begins the abhorrent labor of creation in isolation, and grows increasingly restless, fearful, and foreboding as his work nears completion.
