Fired from her first job in publishing, she jumps at the chance to be assistant to the celebrated Maud Dixon, the anonymous best-selling novelist. The arrangement comes with conditions - high secrecy, living in an isolated house in the countryside. Before long, the two of them are on a research trip to Morocco, to inspire the much-promised second novel. Beach walks, red sunsets and long, whisky-filled evening discussions...win-win, surely?

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Veronica McCreedy is about to have the journey of a lifetime....
Veronica McCreedy lives in a mansion by the sea. She loves a nice cup of Darjeeling tea whilst watching a good wildlife documentary. And she’s never seen without her ruby-red lipstick.
Although these days, Veronica is rarely seen by anyone, because at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone.
She can be found either collecting litter from the beach (‘people who litter the countryside should be shot’), trying to locate her glasses (‘someone must have moved them’) or shouting instructions to her assistant, Eileen (‘Eileen, door!’).
Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway.... And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies.
But today...today, Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this.

A heartwarming story
A wonderful story with a charming character development. It was delightful to hear about the main characters' past and her journey through Antarctica. Having 3 different narrators really helps keep track of everyone but also they each bring their characters to life, allowing you to really picture everything thats happening. I really enjoyed this book.

Enjoyable listen
Hazel Prior is a new author for me, and I'm glad I found her. The book is the story of an octogenarian woman who decided to travel from Scotland to the Antarctic to visit a scientific community studying penguins. She discovers a lot about herself during her visit. She develops from a deliberately isolated individual to someone who sees the value of others. Very well read and a great story.

Lovely gentle story in an unusual setting
A refreshingly different story partly because of its location in Antarctica , partly because the central character is a feisty 86 yr old curmudgeonly lady but mainly because of the 5,000 penguins.
Veronica , a very wealthy lady with no family embarks on a hazardous stay at a penguin research station in Antarctica , on a whim , after seeing a TV programme about the Penguins.
She goes there in order to see for herself if they merit being recipients from her Will to the tune of several millions .
The story is about the people at the research station, Terri , grumpy Mike & Dietrich , an adopted penguin Patrick/ Pip & Patrick , & the long lost grandson she didn’t know she had.
We learn of her life prior to this expedition from diaries entrusted to Patrick & we learn the reason for her feistiness & independence.
An unusual but entertaining story.

Charming, beautiful and uplifting
Mrs McCreedy, aged 85, lives alone in Scotland with her helper visiting. She is what is often described as “a character”. Her thoughts turn to who or what to leave her considerable wealth to when she dies, as a result of which her life changes in so many ways, including meeting penguins.
This is a wonderful heart-lifting story about Veronica McCreedy, the people she meets and, of course, penguins. Through her quest for a worthy recipient of her monies, we learn about Veronica’s life, and what has shaped her. It took me a few chapters to get into, but after that the variety of characters came alive and I was charmed, and amused, by this gentle, but interesting story.
I listed to the audio version and the various narrators sound exactly as you would expect the characters to be. Fantastic!
5*s from me, because the characters and story were interesting and the story beautiful. Also I learnt a little about Adélie penguins. I enjoyed the book so much that this morning I have been looking into holidays to visit the Adélie penguins – not to be, but I enjoyed the dream!
