Emilie Wilhelmine Bertha Behrens wurde am 7. September 1848 in Thale, Sachsen-Anhalt geboren und starb am 9. September 1912 in Radebeul bei Dresden. Nach der Schulzeit in Quedlinburg und einigen Jahren bei Ihren Eltern in Salzwedel, Niedersachsen, veröffentlichte sie 1878 ihren ersten Roman "Aus dem Leben meiner alten Freundin", der hohe Auflagen erreichte. Sie war eine der wichtigsten Mitarbeiterinnen der Zeitschrift Die Gartenlaube und schrieb eine Reihe von erfolgreichen Romanen, die ganz in der Tradition von Eugenie Marlitt und Elisabeth Wernerstanden. Hedwig Courths-Mahler war eine ihrer prominentesten Leserinnen.
