Im ersten Teil beschreibt er sich sowie die zeitgenössische Gesellschaft, für die er nur Bitterkeit verspürt, während er im zweiten, stilistisch sehr unterschiedlichen Teil auf die in der Vergangenheit liegenden Niederlagen seines Lebens eingeht. Dostojewski erhielt für diesen psychologischen "Geniestreich" ein großes Lob von Friedrich Nietzsche.
