Umso enttäuschter war er über den amerikanischen Kapitalismus und vor allem über die Sklaverei. Seine Kritik an Land und Leuten formulierte er unmittelbar und nicht ohne Ironie in seinen Aufzeichnungen aus Amerika, gelesen von Christian Brückner.
