明治時代に東大に通っていた「僕」は、大学の真向かいにある下宿･上条で岡田という青年と親しくしています。毎日の散歩の途中で岡田が目撃したのは､ 無縁坂の一軒家の前に立つ不思議な女性と出会います。つい最近引っ越してきた様子の彼女と岡田は､ それ以降はすれ違う度に言葉を交わすようになりました。名前はお玉、以前は秋葉原で飴細工の屋台を出している父親とふたりだけで暮らしていたそうです。 一目みた時から岡田に心を奪われてしまったお玉は､今の生活を捨て去ってでも彼と一緒になることを夢想していくのでした。

1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。
