「髪の毛はわれわれ中国人の宝であり、かつ敵である」
Ｎは自分の頭を撫でまわしながら語った。
「わたしの最も得意としたのは、最初の双十節（革命記念日。辛亥革命の幕開けとなる反乱が武昌で起きた日）以後のことで、その時はもうわたしが道を歩いても人から笑われることがない。」
Ｎは留学中、辮子[べんつ]（弁髪、清朝時代に強制された髪型。
頭の周囲の髪をそり、中央に残した髪を編んで後ろへ長く垂らしたもの）
を切った。別に深い意味があったわけでなく、不便に感じたからだが、周囲の人間からは嫌われだした。
国へ帰ってつけまげをつけても偽物だとわかると冷笑され、罪人扱いされた。
第一双十節以降、罵られなくなったが、Ｎはこうも言う。革命派の理想家たちが、女子の断髪をやかましく説いてるが、
既に髪を切った女がそれに因って学校に入学にも行けず働きにも出れなくなっている。
なまじい自由平等の話を覚えさせたら、それこそ一生涯の苦痛だろう、と。
