中川船長は、十五人の優秀な乗組員と南の海へ漁業の調査に出かけた。途中で船は座礁し、海図とコンパス、多くの道具と食料が流された。生きる道は、無人島で命をつなぎ、助けを待つのみ。飲み水と塩を得る、みはりのやぐらを作る、火種を確保する……次々に生じる課題を、創意工夫で乗り越えていく。魚と海がめを食べ、流木や船の部品で道具を作る。雨の日は集まってお茶会をし、アザラシとの交流も。いつか助けが来ると信じ、つとめて明るく島暮らしを続ける十六人。全員で日本へ帰れるか。
