Story
These two women's lives have been shaped by the decisions they made back in 1968 – when they were young, idealistic and naïve. In a world that was a whirl of politics and protest, consciousness raising and sexual liberation, Zoë and Julia were looking for love, truth and their own happy endings. They soon discover that life is rarely that simple, as their bad behaviour leads them down paths that they can never turn back from.

Story
The Marjorie Marshall Memorial Cafeteria has been serving refreshments and raising money at the hospital for over 50 years, long after anybody can remember who Marjorie Marshall actually was. Staffed by successive generations of dedicated volunteers, the beloved cafeteria is known as much for offering a kind word and sympathetic ear (and often unsolicited life advice) as for its tea and buns.

Story
Privacy is hard to maintain in Badara, the kind of small Australian country town where everyone knows everyone else's business. So discovers single mum Paige when she and her three children arrive from the city seeking refuge. Paige's only respite from child care and loneliness is the Tuesday gym club, where she had feared the judgement of the town matriarchs, but she is met only with generosity and a plethora of baked goods. Besides, both the brusque Marion and her polished sister-in-law Briony are too busy dealing with their own dramas to examine hers.

Publisher's Summary
When Mim Squires and Mathias Vander are stranded together on a disrupted flight home to Perth, they are surprised to find that they have much in common. Mim owns a bookshop, Mathias is a writer, and both are at turning points in their lives. Mim's childhood polio is taking a toll on her life. Mathias is contemplating a cross-continent move to be nearer his daughter.
But life back in Perth is not smooth sailing, with their respective family members going through their own upheavals. As Mim and Mathias both struggle to adjust to the challenges of being in their late seventies, secrets from the past that neither wishes to face rise to the surface, challenging their long-held beliefs in their independence and singularity.
At the end of the day can they muster the wisdom and the courage they need to change?

lovely relationship developments
I appreciate the effort put into the different accents and voices of the characters but I found it a bit distracting.
although it's a relatively simple story on the surface I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their relationships develop

Good story - not so keen on the narration
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as previous books by Liz Byrski. While the story itself was strong and engaging, I found the writing to be slow and the characters too prone to introspection.
But it was the narration that was the weakest aspect. The female voices were insipid and either heavily ‘strine’ or posh Pom. I do wish narrators would simply read the stories and not act their way through them.

A life well lived and shared of friends and family
A wonderful story about misunderstanding relationships and forming relationships in life. In particular it highlights the importance of connecting with people and being open to opportunity when you thought none were possible. A great example of how life changes and that love is never out of the question.

Disappointing
I would have liked this better if I’d read it as a book rather than listening to it. The voices that the reader used put me off. Mim and Mathias sounded ancient and the English accents were so pompous. Jodie and Carla also didn’t sound natural. The reader is probably a lovely person and I’m sorry I didn’t like her performance in this book.

Dreary
This narrator sounds constipated and shouldn’t be hired. The characters have very little, dull lives that shouldn’t be subjected to others.

Another wonderful story from Liz BUT
Good story almost rendered impossible to listen to by the “voices” of some of the characters, especially Matthias.
It really made it difficult to enjoy as the rasping nature of the voice, plus the pretend accent spoilt the book for me. Suggest listen to the trial before you purchase.
