His vengeance against the gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive...and teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series - satisfying combat, breathtaking scale, and a powerful narrative - and fuses them anew.

Story
The 26th century. Once considered clandestine, the Spartan-II program has now gone public. Tales of armored supersoldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultra-secret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as “Section Three” devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. It will need hundreds of willing soldiers, though - and one more Spartan - to get the job done.

Better than the Game!
It's a big challenge to condense such a lengthy and disjointed narrative into one compelling novel, and Gordon has done an excellent job. Perhaps all I could have asked for as an Assassin's Creed fan is a bit more of the Sci-Fi elements, but even the game barely spends much time on it. In this way though, it reads almost like a believable historical story, and it's much more moving emotionally than the game, especially because there is a deeper sense of scale in both time and in the vastness of the Greek world. I would love to see Gordon continue the story into it's more fantastical Atlantean continuation. the game is somewhat commical, but Gordon could give it the grit and weight it deserves. Something the game lacks in Elysium.

Let down by the narration
I love the Assassin’s Creed games and have listened to all of the previous game themed books written by Oliver Bowden, so was a bit disappointed that this book had a different author. I’m happy to say that the book is just as well written as its predecessors and follows the epic storyline of the game well, so if you haven’t finished the game yet I would recommend to not read / listen to the book yet or you’ll ruin the experience! The audio version is unfortunately severely let down by the dreadful narration. I found it extremely annoying that the narrator did not even know how to pronounce the very well known names in the story, such as Hippocrates, the ‘father of medicine’ and Socrates, the classical Greek philosopher, or even Pythagoras; it made me wonder if she even understood the characters she was reading about! On top of this, the ‘voices’ for some of the characters are pretty awful and really do distract you from the story. It’s definitely one that would be better to read rather than listen too; if I didn’t want this book for completion of the seres, I would seriously consider returning it and I’ll be wary of buying audiobooks read by this narrator in future
