Publisher's Summary

They stole her magic.

They killed her friends.

Nothing in the multiverse will stop her quest for revenge.

Kate Rossdale once held all the promise of becoming Baltimore’s greatest sorceress. But a promise is a hard thing to hold when your coven is murdered, your magic is stripped away, and the only solace left to you comes one powdered line at a time.

When she’s offered the restoration of her power by a man she doesn’t know or trust, Kate sets in motion the retribution of her enemies.

Soon she finds herself racing across the globe, and across worlds, venturing into exotic realms of forbidden dreams, to the spires of Lost Carcosa, hunting for the magic-thief who robbed her of everything she held dear, including the most dangerous magic any sorceress can possess - hope.

A bolt of emerald lightning from Seth

I was a bit apprehensive about this one. the Valducan series is easily one of my favorites not just from Seth, but in general. Ashes is a slight departure from the extremely pulpy, almost blockbuster action that is something like Damoren, but it still packs a great punch.

Like a lot of Seth's work, there's hidden groundwork in this story. characters feel like they have a history, the locations have significance, and the lore is thick that you can almost feel it. you can get a little lost unfortunately, with the multitude of alien world's and species presented on the book. but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

while I miss R.C Brays voice, Caroline Shaffer does an excellent job as Kate and a slew of supporting characters. Each one grows more and more likeable as the book progresses. not quite to the same extent as the valducan series manages to accomplish, but still.

appreciated were the many nods to other authors of weird fiction, and the fantastical creatures inside this book. The hounds are up there with deep ones and Eldar things, as well as many of the creepy elementals presented.

a fantastical romp through the cosmos.

Seth never disappoints

I love Seth's books...I was first introduced to Seth (I won't insult him by butchering his last name) via his role playing YouTube channel.
Then. I picked up his books & they're just as good as i would expect from a master DM/GM.

A long enchanting and thrilling ride.

This took me a while to get through but it was very much worth my time. I truly enjoyed the setting and the characters. I was heartbroken when some of them met their end. Seth has such a way with the gory details, its morbidly fasinating. Caroline did such a wonderful job reading and helped amplify the impact of events thought the book for me. I honestly hope this gets some sort of spin off following Spire. It'd be interesting to see the world through their perspective. Overall this wonderful book was a delight and a joy to read.

I Want More of This!

This is one of those stories that is insanely difficult to stop listening to or reading (I own both Kindle and Audible versions). I keep wanting more and more and was saddened when the book had ended. Not because of the ending itself, but because the story was over. Ashes of Onyx offers sorcery in modern day times, which is something I absolutely love! I am really glad I own this book! It is THAT GOOD! Seth Skorkowsky tells a fantastic story and Caroline Shaffer is one the best narrators I've ever heard! I almost felt like I was there witnessing everything.

It would be beyond awesome if this becomes a series of books, or maybe a major motion picture! Mr. Skorkowsky, if you read this, thank you! Thank You! and THANK YOU!

What a World

Mr. Skorkowsky has a way of creating worlds that beg to be explored! I had high hopes after reading the Valducan series and he exceeded all of them. I greatly hope to see a return to this at some point.

Ms. Shaffer is quite an entertaining performer and especially sells the anger and frustration the main character directs to others very well.

A very solid fantasy ride.

I've watched his youtube videos on RPGs for a while and hadn't realized he was a writer until this book.

This is a very well done fantasy novel. Well paced, with a good plot line. The audio book is well read and the voice actor knows what she's doing.

I did find it funny that the narrator had to voice a few sound effects that were written in the book. It was a little odd, but it didn't pull me out of the book.

The only negative aspect I can find about the book is with familiarity. It would have been nice to hear more about the The Yellow King in regards to the Cthulhu mythos. At least to touch on it more. As well as the descriptions of the spells used in the book. The way it was written, I understand what an Emerald Lance is, but I would have liked to known more about its power level versus more lower-level spells. Like more examples of simple spells used in the beginning for attacks. It felt like the Emerald Lance was an out of nowhere spell that came from Left Field and dominated the last act of the book. Don't get me wrong it was a fun spell and it was described beautifully. It just seemed like a catch-all at the end.
And more could have been described about the Magic Teleportation Circle that became a key point midday through. Either emphasis on the mechanics of how the spell worked in universe, or a description of different uses and the time it took to write out prior to it's use as a major tool for travel. More of that would have helped to cement what a big deal the magic circle was in regards to the character being able to cast a larger and larger one. Through my own experience with RPGs, I can infer a lot, but I can see where some newer readers could be lost.

Overall, I very much enjoyed the novel.

Well done, Sir!

Sincerely,

Virgil Allen Moore

Very Enjoyable

I would have given four and a half stars if had that been an option. If you want Shakespeare, this is probably not the book for you. If you want good engrossing fantasy try it out.
