Publisher's Summary

From listening to his grandmother recite epic poems from memory to curling up in bed while his father read funny verses, award-winning actor John Lithgow grew up with poetry. Ever since, John has been an enthusiastic seeker of poetic experience, whether reading, reciting, or listening to great poems.

The wide variety of carefully selected poems in this book provides the perfect introduction to appeal to listeners new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dylan Thomas are just a few names among Lithgow's comprehensive list of poetry masters. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud."

This unique package provides a multimedia poetry experience with a bonus MP3 CD of revelatory poetry readings by John and the familiar voices of such notable performers as Eileen Atkins, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Billy Connolly, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Lynn Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Gary Sinise, and Sam Waterston. Every listener will enjoy reciting or listening to these poems with the entire family, appreciating how each one comes to life through the spoken word in this superlative poetry collection.

Joyful

I loved the way John Lithgow spoke about the poems, with passion, humour and joyful reverence. The bite sized chapters are wonderful, not too long, not too short. This is a book I can keep coming back to.

IGNITED MY JOY OF POETRY - THANK YOU JOHN LITHGOW!!!!

I don’t even know what inspired me to buy this audiobook. Something did, and how glad I am. John Lithgow gives us the gift of a carefully selected group of friends we now can call our own, with the works performed beautifully in a way that brings them to life and speaks straight to my heart. I loved these poems. I especially loved Dover Beach and I Would I Were A Careless Child. So much gratitude for this book. Thank you John Lithgow and all others involved in producing it!!!

Something for everyone

There are selective poems spoken by inviting voices met with thorough analysis by Lithgow. His passion for poetry is explained like a scholar or teacher. Some poems spoke to me, others didn't. If this book teaches you something, it is that certain pieces speak to different people and that everyone's taste is different.

I didn't like third rock.

John Lithgow's book is amazing, In concept and execution. His love for poetry and his evervescent energy in expressing it is, infectious. The poems are read by celebrities that John has corralled, such as Morgan Freeman and Billy Connolly. The poems and, the poets, are described by John along with his personal anecdotes relating to them.
