Publisher's Summary

Out in the darkness of space, something is targeting the Greatships.

With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species.

It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

All it took, to make her way onto the crew of the Greatship Athens, was thousands of hours in simulators, dedication and pawning or selling every scrap of her old life in order to forge a new one. But though she's made her way onboard with faked papers, leaving her old life - and scandals - behind isn't so easy.

She may have just combined all the dangers of her former life, with all the perils of the new....

Fantastic spy procedural meets space opera meets period navy story

I’ve never come across a sci fi or fantasy author quite like Miles Cameron. He might be my favourite. He has a totally unique narrative rhythm, and a remarkable way of building worlds in ebbing and flowing waves of action and reflection. I normally don’t really go in for ‘procedurals’ but he explores the minutiae of routines, procedures and ‘the way things work’ in his worlds with such loving attention and verve I can’t help but he drawn in. In the traitor sun series it was the chivalry, courtly love and mind palace magic. In the masters and mages series it was the rhythm of study in the academy, of military campaign, and spying. Here it’s a coming of age tale set against the finest traditions of the navy… but in space, where spy plots and intrigue must fit around the rigours of acceleration and deceleration in space. Absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the second book.

Engaging story, incredible narrator

A fast moving, engaging story that is wonderfully, almost lusciously, narrated. The story and narration came together beautifully. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did and now I want more!

A very charming book and easy listener

This book is basically a mash up of mercantile age of sail in the future. It is a fun fusion of "what if you live on a spare trading ship that was run like a air craft carrier".

It's not super deep, but it has lots of good subtle world building and the person doing the voice acting was very nice to listen to with enough emotion to make it very pleasant to sit for long stretches enjoying the book.

I will certainly be getting the sequel.

Superb

One of the very best books from one of my favourite authors. A top ten narration of all time. Military Sci-Fi as it should be done: multi-layered characters who evolve, excellent world building, fast paced storytelling, and credible procedural detail to hold it all together.

Young Adult Space Romp

Well written but a major trope fest.

Young woman with a troubled past makes her place as a pilot on a spaceship... and yes, I will be reading the sequel.

Excellent narration. Highly enjoyable

Slow going which I couldn't complete

Got through a couple of hours and couldn't go on. The reader makes it sound like a kids book and the story is slow and dragged on.
