Publisher's Summary

Martin Arrowsmith’s youthful curiosity for science has blossomed into an altruistic devotion to medicine and research. The doctor moves from small towns to big cities and from local offices to prestigious institutes. With every step upward that Arrowsmith takes in his career, his idealism is challenged by the greed, corruption, and commercialism of the scientific community, as well as by the temptations of women, money, power, and glory. Against the odds, and through loss and groundbreaking discovery, Dr. Arrowsmith must stay true.

One of the most widely read novels of its era, Sinclair Lewis’s Arrowsmith explores one man’s quest for integrity and salvation in a world determined to exploit his every passion.

The trials of an idealist

Set during the early decades of the 20th century, this is a story of moral struggle. From his university days studying medicine, through life as a small town doctor and then a career change into the supervision of public health, Martin Arrowsmith continues to encounter the siren songs of moral compromise and dollar worship. Such is American life. Then, after getting a foothold as a research scientist, he also must contemplate compromise.

Worth reading (or listening to in this very well performed version), but not the author's best work. Placed in the moral crucible Martin A is not a compelling figure. Too often his torments seem expressed only as querulous grumbling and it is a struggle to embrace him. The book's glory is a gallery of engaging secondary characters.
