Publisher's Summary

Illium and Aodhan. Aodhan and Illium. For centuries they've been inseparable: the best of friends, closer than brothers, companions of the heart. But that was before - before darkness befell Aodhan and shattered him, body, mind and soul. Now, at long last, Aodhan is healing, but his new-found strength and independence may come at a devastating cost - his relationship with Illium.

As they serve side by side in China, a territory yet marked by the evil of its former archangel, the secret it holds nightmarish beyond imagining, things come to an explosive decision point. Illium and Aodhan must either walk away from the relationship that has defined them - or step forward into a future that promises a bond infinitely precious in the life of an immortal...but that demands a terrifying vulnerability from two badly bruised hearts.

No sex please, we're gay!

I was really looking forward to this addition to the series, but was confused and disappointed. I guess it is a risk for an author to tackle a gay central couple when all the previous books are absolutely straight, but she made that choice, so why cop out on actually writing a real relationship? Gay people have sex too! If readers find this uncomfortable, the blurb should be enough for them to avoid it. If the author doesn't feel able to write gay sex, then again, don't write a gay couple.
But does it really matter if Illium and Aodhan only get a couple of kisses and a cuddle? Yes, I think it does. The way a couple handle intimacy; the negotiation of consent, trust, preferences, lust, boundaries, joy tell us so much about those characters. In comparison to the intensity of the relationships between Raphael and Elena, the eroticism of Naasir and Andi or the heartbreaking intensity of Dmitri and Honor, this relationship is flat and passionless. It also feels prudish and dishonest, after more than a dozen previous books to suddenly get prissy about sex, just because this isn't a straight couple.
I will still enjoy rereading the earlier books as well as the Psy-changeling series, but this one, just no.

Tender slow burn

I've waited a long time for Bluebell's and Sparkle's story.
My biggest fear was that the author wouldn't do them justice - it had to be an epic love story after all the build up. And for the most part, it lived up to the expectations. It was very tender and I loved the flashbacks. However, I had hoped there would also be epic passion - like in all the rest of the pairings.
While I had no clue that Blue and Adi loved each other, their friendship-to-lovers transition was not all that well done, IMO. It IS hard to do but I've read some wonderful examples (Fourth point of contact by AJ Sherwood is one of my favourite love stories ever and does this transition masterfully).
I suspect the author isn't entirely comfortable in writing a gay couple just yet. Or perhaps there's external pressures to keep it clean as the series has been strictly male\female until now.
Whatever the reason, I feel that this lack made the book fall a bit short on epic love and passion that the previous books had.I

But it was still lovely and I'm so glad that she let them get together. I would really love another book with them - maybe with Blue ascending to archangel. That would be amazing, I think. A great fresh direction for the series.

Definitely recommended. Narration was well done as well.

It felt forced

I am all for the epic bromance but nothing more. this felt like it was slaped together because of outside pressure. not like a natural progression of the story, Don't care if sparkle is Gay, he didn't have a Love interest before, but bluebell had a clearly defined preferance and type. that can't just be forcefully changed so late in the Series

Wow

This is my favourite book of this series. I fell in love with Bluebell and sparkle from the moment I met them. I had dreaded the day someone would separate them. I worry no longer.

Worth the wait.....

I bought the audible book weeks ago, but put it aside because I was sick at the time. I knew I couldn't give my full attention to Blue and Addy's love story. The wait was so worth it!!!

I loved the humour, the sad moments, Addy and Blue's moments of realisation, and everything in between. The building and maintaining of relationships, recognising and valuing the building-blocks, all part of Nalini's amazing ability to create worlds, and characters and qualities I/we can see in ourseves and others, when we allow ourselves.

I'll definitely read the book (paper and kindle versions) and listen to it again, as I do with all Nalini's books. Thank you Nalini :-)

Wow

This is Sparkles and Bluebell’s story and some may say that it has missed the mark for this pair but this is only the start of their new chapter. It’s exactly what I would expect from this pair. And I look forward to seeing their relationship grow over the next books.

Exceptional!

💕 Loved Aodhan and Illium's story. It was worth the wait❣️ Nalini Singh knows how to draw you in to her worlds. It is always an emotional rollercoaster and never disappoints. I always finish her books satisfied and a little sad- because now I'll have to wait for the next book😔.
