Story
If there’s one trait that makes someone well-suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch - metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy - with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

Story
In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

Publisher's Summary
The long-awaited, enormously entertaining memoir by one of the great artists of our time.
In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire 60-year-long and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Hannah and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances, and his famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.
This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

What a real treat this book is
Definitely Woody Allen is at its best performing his own autobiography. I’ve always enjoyed his jokes and sense of humor. This book is as cool as everything else he’s produced. Thanks Woody for shearing the awful story about what happened with Mia and really sorry to hear the craziness of the media. Reading this book I’ve laughed so much. Thank you !

Woody Allen's autobiography
Woody Allen narrating his autobiography was truly amazing. I enjoyed every minute of his open, frank, honest retelling of his life which was very funny in many parts. I disagree with him that he has not made a good movie. He has entertained millions around the world for a lifetime. A truly great career. His humility is probably the most surprising feature of his autobiography.

Fascinating life read by the enigmatic subject
Great to hear Woody’s story read in his unique voice. Would have loved to hear about the making of each film, anecdotes, challenges, etc. Love his off-hand comedic comments.

There are two books here
I am a fan of Woody Allen’s work. Unfortunately, he lets the Dylan Farrow allegations subsume too much. He should have written one book dealing with all of those allegations and refuted them there. He then could have written a more balanced autobiography. He also completely failed to deal with what Muriel Hemingway raised in article a while back re his trip to her place, when she was still quite young. It was a glaring omission, given that he dealt with the Farrow allegations at such length. That being said, I enjoy his humour, especially when he deals with his childhood. He should have spoken more about the challenges of his work because that’s why we’re here too: not just the allegations.
The book could have used an better editor, to give it more structure and coherence. Often, when he speaks of his films, he just descends in to “xyz was a beautiful/fabulous actress” - yada, yada, yada…he never really goes into what he was trying achieve with each film. But I note that he is not a film maker of high ambition and that his films tend to be himself doing largely the same thing, albeit in different contexts, eg Owen Wilson and Timothee Chalmet were just playing versions of Woody Allen.
So, if you are a fan, you’ll probably enjoy this. It’s also quite sad to hear him to be so distressed whilst recounting the allegations at such an old age. According to him, and his references, they are false. It’s fair to say that he is a victim of cancel culture and the Metoo movement. It will be interesting to see whether America appreciates one of its greatest film makers or not, when he passes away, and whether anyone shows any regret at having him cancelled, ala Barry Humphries in Australia.

Allen at his awkward best
I enjoyed his book as I enjoy his movies. He fumbles through this but gives great insight to his unconventional life and past relationships. Worth a listen.

Never doubted you for a minute Woody.
Paints a clear picture of himself and his life. Still delivering the funny lines. Shame on those who denounced him.

If you're a Woody Allen fan....
Thoroughly enjoyed equally as much upon second listen to this bio of the great man's life. That it's narrated by Allen takes it all to another level. There is a fairly extensive chapter or 2 relating to the angst of Mia Farrow, and relating to his now marriage, in excess of 20yrs to her adopted daughter, Soon Yi, yet this is entirely relevant and, moreover, to me at least gave huge & further insights into the full nature of it all, as it sheds so much light upon Farrows true nature, most of which was revelatory. It's a great listen if you have any interest at all in the man. Brilliantly narrated and very highly recommended.
