Publisher's Summary

Dawson Angel is a teenager in small-town Kansas who has just told his best friend he is gay and soon regrets that decision. To make matters worse, he has also fallen in love with the neighbor boy, a handsome young Mennonite named Derek. Nothing seems to go right as the week progresses in this engaging tale of youth that reminds one of a modern Catcher in the Rye.

Good start but faltered …

Raised in a small Kansas town, teenager Dawson Angel recounts his last week alive, telling us from the opening paragraph of this 43-pg short story that he’s going to die. In a very packed week, he comes out to his best friend, spends time trying to cover up his admission, and has his first sexual encounter. Dawson’s tone is chatty and fairly upbeat, which, while entertaining, seems incongruous given he knows he will die. Prior to the sexual encounter, the story reads well, giving insight into an adolescent’s experiences - it could happen. After the encounter, the characters read like a high school play: simple, not realistic, with clichés and public service announcement slogans as dialogue. Audio narrator JB Burgess does a great job of capturing adolescent speech and attitude.
