In one of the most luxurious cities on earth…
A billion-dollar deal is about to go badly wrong. A lavish night out is about to end in murder. And the British government is about to be plunged into crisis.
In the heart of the British establishment…
Lord Hartley, the latest in a line of peers going back over two hundred years, lies dying. But his will triggers an inheritance with explosive consequences.
Two deaths. Continents apart. No obvious connection.
So why are they both at the centre of a master criminal's plot for revenge?
And can Scotland Yard's William Warwick uncover the truth before it's too late…
The ultimate race-against-time is about to begin.

The biggest issue? The children in the story. Archer seems to have modelled them after some overly precocious grandchildren—so clever, so informed, so smug—that it pulls the whole story off course. These kids spout obscure facts about art, politics, and the monarchy with the confidence of seasoned scholars. We’re not just talking the odd insight here and there; it’s encyclopaedic-level knowledge most adults wouldn’t even have, let alone children.
Worse still, I was listening to the audiobook, which only amplified the irritation. Their smug little voices grated on me so much that I ended up turning the book off more than once just to give my ears a break. If I’d been reading a print version, I might’ve skimmed past these moments—but in audio, you’re stuck with them.
I get it—Archer clearly adores his grandchildren. But that doesn’t mean they need to be written as pint-sized PhD candidates in every field under the sun. It just didn’t feel real, and it took me out of the story every time.
Sorry Jeffrey—this one missed the mark for me.
