This one really leans into the epic fantasy genre that I loved reading as a child. I was blown away by the complexity that is no longer confusing. I think the first book set the scene to allow this one to make sense and to flow from idea to idea. This one deals very much with Declan's journey from 'mute' to the potential saviour of the moment. We meet many characters along the way, all of whom add to the texture of the storytelling. The brothers stories are separated in this one with Keelan taking one direction and Declan stumbling into his own. Needless to say, the end of this one sets up all that is to follow. It was a shocking reveal regarding who facilitated it.
Carmen Rose and Kenn Peterson give superb performances and help us keep track of the many characters.
This also includes the prequel story "A Healer's Wrath', where we see the beginning of the war of the Mages and in particular Irina. I decided to listen to them in chronological order as Book 3 includes the other prequel, so if you buy all three that are currently published, you can do that too.

And I thought the first book was epic!
