Amygdala is a story of animals, born to a world of swirling, fractal chaos, who learned the art of civilization. Their government was forged in fire, ruled only by the objective truth of all things, with no room for incompetence, mercy, or even morality. Their city, 'The Underbirth', holds within it the greatest collection of animal minds, born of mechanical systems designed to test everything: natural, cultural, industrial selection. Their art is beguiling, their science boundless, their bodies strong and lean and perfect.
And yet, amidst the beauty of a culture ruled by absolute competence, some begin to ask: what is the cost of civilization? When do animals stop being animals? Is there another way?

Right off the bat, this audiobook is something special. Sam Fennah comes from a family of musicians and as a result this audiobook is almost fully scored to some beautiful music. Every character and location has its own leitmotif. I've never seen so much care put to this aspect of audiobook production, especially from an indie author.
The best way I could compare this book to others I've read is it reminds me of Watership Down and Chapterhouse Dune, along with a deconstruction of Atlas Shrugged.
To acknowledge a frequent topic of criticism: This book has a lot of psychosexual themes in it. Kivouac society is one in which hierarchy is enforced through brutal and violent displays of sexualised dominance. I'm of the opinion this is there because it keeps women interested and given that Sam's fanbase appears to be predominantly women, I respect an artist who knows how to secure the bag. If you can handle the degree of sexual weirdness that's in Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune, you'll be fine here. Just letting you know it's part of the package.
For the rest of us, there's the political thriller aspect to this novel. The city in which the novel takes place is ruled by someone whose ideology is best described as Objectivism with some Renaissance Manorialism characteristics. While this is functional, this leaves a lot of people unsatisfied and wanting something better. The main storyline revolves around a plot by a group of socialists from many different parts of society, to perform a bloodless coup d'etat against the dominant ruling faction, sparked off by a technological breakthrough which undermines one of the fundamental assumptions behind the currently dominant ideology.
To say anything more about how it works out would spoil it for you, I just hope that's enough to get your attention. Otherwise, Sam's got the first two hours of the book as a free preview on his Youtube channel, go check that out if you're still on the fence.
