Critic Reviews

Ambush truly kicks butt and takes names, crackling with tension from page one with a plot as sharp as broken glass. Barbara Nickless is a superb writer.” --Steve Berry, number-one internationally bestselling author

BEST OF THE SERIES!!!!

This is the third book in the Sydney Rose Parnell series and I think it might be my favorite. It could be read as a stand alone book however I would strongly suggest listening to the series in order. This is a fast paced procedural that keeps your attention through out. The story takes Sydney to Mexico to protect a young boy she had rescued in Iraq. Back then he had seen something he shouldn't have. His mother had been murdered. Now, who ever wanted him dead then is closing in and Sydney wants to find him. Meanwhile, back at home another ex-Marine has been murdered. Sydney's life is threatened at the airport. And more and more... This book has a very well constructed plot. Lots of moving parts and unexpected characters. Sydney's dog Clyde as always remains a hero. If you have kindle unlimited this book is FREE to borrow with the kindle edition. Emily Sutton-Smith does an outstanding job narrating. This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

Amazing Series

This is the third book in the series, though that shouldn’t stop you from reading it. Although Ms. Nickless references some of the past events, new readers should have little trouble understanding what is happening. The only hiccup might come from the issues Sydney has brought back with her from time spent as a Marine in Iraq, but there should be enough explanation to help a new reader understand. This is not another railroad mystery, but a fast-paced story that begins with Sydney working on a private mission in Mexico. Before mid-book, the tale has involved every part of Sydney’s life, from her current job to her time as a Marine, and spilling over into her personal life (both past and present). There is plenty of action that continually propels the plot forward, and since Sydney is telling the story, we solve the mystery with her, clue by clue. Ms. Nickless is at the top of her game with this story. Meticulous research adds an element of realism missing from so many books today, breathing plenty of life into both the plot and the characters. Sydney tells the story with a level-headed cynicism, seasoned with the self-doubt of one who is grappling with the memories of a past that refuses to leave her be. I was extremely impressed with the author’s first two books in this series, but there is no doubt in my mind that “Ambush” is her best offering so far. Five stars. Emily Sutton-Smith is outstanding with the delivery of the story

action packed

I am surprised at how things go down in these stories and this was no exception. I did not see things ending like they did. The story is action packed and keeps going non stop

Loved this audio book. Looking forward to number 4, even though this book seems to close out the first trilogy. Looking forward to another one.

Must be patient to listen toBarbara's books!

Barbara weaves an intriguing story and it takes time to build. The narrator is good but sometimes a bit monotonous. I was able to figure out the ultimate bad person well before the identity was revealed (the name was the giveaway). The first book was still the best for me. What I did not care for in this book was that the well-trained Marines were consistently out-maneuvered, even when they were prepared. I know that there has to be dramatic points but always having the highly skilled good guys constantly caught off-guard got a bit old. There were some good surprises in this story and it did not finish in a completely predictable way. I am looking forward to the next book in the series which is set to be released in March of 2020.

Another Nice Story in the Series

I have come to enjoy this series about the railroad police officer and her canine partner. You do have to suspend your disbelief at times with the conspiracy from Iraq angle, but it is a very entertaining series. The main character is someone you root for as she navigates her way through her mysteries. Her partner, “Clyde”is also a favorite of mine. He’s a good dog. The narrator does a very nice job and having a female narrator makes the book better. I’ll keep reading these stories as long as the author keeps writing them.

Mafia gypsies and other bad accents

The narrator can't do a Mexican accent to save their life. Sound like mafioso gypsies (all stereotypes present and offensively accounted for). I definitely gave up on this audiobook. I might go back to the print book, but those accents have really undermined my confidence in the author.
