About this listen

A high school field hockey star must choose between her love of the game and her new, distractingly beautiful rival in this queer YA romance perfect for fans of She Drives Me Crazy and Cleat Cute!

"A masterclass in romantic tension."—Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Evelyn was raised to see field hockey as war.

Before she could write her own name, her family’s legacy on the field was already spelled out. Every step Evelyn takes toward glory is within a footprint her mother left behind. And no step matters more than this next one, with Evelyn about to lead her varsity team into their final battle season. Evelyn is beyond ready to score the Nationals title and win the critical scholarship to her mom’s alma mater that comes with it.

This year, she’s out for blood, and nothing can stand in her way...

...except for Rosa Alvarez, the highly talented new recruit on her biggest rival’s team.

After a humiliating homecoming game and follow-up prank leave the two enemies in a stalemate, they grudgingly strike a deal to help each other overcome their weaknesses on the field. But the more time Evelyn spends with Rosa, the more she finds herself casting her hardened armor aside, until she begins to wonder what life might be like if she left the battlefield behind and fought for love instead.

Short Review: A good, solid listen - not my usual cup of tea - but unique and many will likely give this one 5 stars,

*** SPOILER REVIEW ***

Kit Rosewaters takes a unique spin on the Sapphic romance with a happy but uncertain ending and plenty of uncertianty and drama on the way. I listen to romance novels for predictabile stories to help with my anxiety so this wasn't my usual cup of tea. Kit addresses important issues in this book and takes you on (for me) a straining emotional experience throughout. I guess what was difficult for me was the vast majority of the book was stressful - I really, really took on the stress the main character was experiencing making it difficult for me to finish the book as I found it pretty exhausting. Unfortunately, also, there wasn't much life in the narration - a bit flat without a lot of deep emotional enthusiasm during excited/sexy scenes (very few of these and they're very clean being a YA book). So [for me] there was too much seriousness in this book with the ending not providing anywhere enough relief to offset it with the final arc being way too short. The book could be a bit depressing and very stressful at times.

So as I like my romance a bit slapstick, relaxed and easy, I struggled with it but I know for sure many people will really, really love this book and it will be exactly what their after. I definitely appreciate the book for what it is...so Kit if you see this review I apologise...I misread the cover thinking it would be a 100% lighthearted YA romance with only a little stress but instead the book tackled a lot of issues but done in a very constructive, tactful and tangible way, So as someone who prefers lighter books with longer-happier endings with a long epilogue filled with magic, I have to give it three stars. Unfortunatley too Dominique Salvacion didn't do her best work on this one either.

A solid listen - a unique approach to the story
