timeless entertainment

written in the 80's but still cutting, amusing and equally poignant today. His Yorkshire accent really makes this an audiobook must.

More, Mr. Bennett, More

A really pleasant discovery, like finding a tenner tucked into a disused jacket, to find Mr. B has recorded what must be an abridged version of his diaries. They usually deal with minutiae for the most part, but it's pleasant to hear Alan ramble on; the witty old gent friend you wish you had, whose views remain modern and timely. Downside: all his audiobook diaries are entirely too brief, and Bennett will skate through a year in about ten minutes. The audio journals should really be collected into a single, lengthier volume (which would still total less than ten hours or so). For that I'd gladly part with the tenner--and then some.

Entertaining

Where does Alan Bennett rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I usually listen to fiction so this was a new and really good experience for me.

What other book might you compare Alan Bennett to, and why?

Kenneth Williams diaries as they both share a dry and waspish sense of humour!

What does Alan Bennett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Hearing Alan's words in his own voice is priceless. I can't get his voice out of my head!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I've listened to this twice so far and definitely missed some nuances first time around. Both times I listened were in one sitting. Highly recommended!

Any additional comments?

Looking forward to listening to the next instalment.

Alan Bennett: excellent writer; excellent narrator

If you could sum up Alan Bennett in three words, what would they be?

Funny, intelligent, wry.

What does Alan Bennett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Bennett is an excellent narrator of his own work. The deadpan northern accent adds to the humour.

Any additional comments?

Being a diary, there was no plotting, but the "story" was engaging throughout.

Another excellent Alan Bennett read.

Alan Bennet has a very dry and witty throw away style which never fails to amuse in a gentle, wry kind of way.

Very good, however....

This is an abridged version, although not stated.
Be aware of this. However, excellent content, the time flies, and before you can believe it, it’s finished.
Why can’t audible put them together so they are available to listen to all the way through? Especially when they have them.
However this is a must have. Alan Bennet speaks very fast in this, so on a second listen you hear more of the nuances, the next too I can’t wait to hear. You really need all three, or better still, get the books.
As one former reviewer states, for all its excellence, be aware of ‘Abridged’ but under no circumstances miss out on listening to this extraordinary genius of this charming, witty, and much missed man.
I doubt that we’ll see his likes again, as theatre is changing, and people are reading less.

brilliant

Read by Alan Bennett, making his diary more authentic. Witty and sometimes caustic in his observations.

What's not to love. Wonderfully narrated by an amazing author. You can't go wrong with an Alan Bennett book....apart from I wish they were longer!

Bennett is brilliantly belligerent

Listening to Alan Bennett is a wonderful treat. His withering tone, razor sharp wit and meandering anecdotes provide a fantastic flavour of this remarkable man's life.

Definitely worth it

Would you listen to Alan Bennett again? Why?

Yes, absolutely. This is the first time I have listened to anything by Alan Bennett. I enjoyed his straight forward candid outlook witty descriptions and commentary of everyday occurrences. These events through his lense are lifted to an interesting and funny level that straddle normal life and it's people, at the same time peeping on the other types, whilst navigating personal and wider life cycles.

Any additional comments?

I would like to have listened to Alan talk in more detail about certain events occurring in the culture, things that happened before I was born or to young to understand.
