تتناول قصة الكرنك لنجيب محفوظ الحديث عن فترة عاشتها جمهوريّة مصر العربية امتدَّت بين حربيْن هما حرب النكسة التي وقعت أحداثها في عام 1967م وحرب التحرير التي وقعت أحداثها في عام 1973م، وتحكي القصة عن الاستبداد الذي ساد الأجواء السياسيّة في فترة حكم الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر وعن فساد أجهزة الأمن والمخابرات المصرية، حيث تتناول قصة مجموعة شبَّان في الجامعة يتمُّ اعتقالهم دون أسباب واضحة ودون أي جريمة، إلا أنَّهم كانوا يلتقون في مقهى الكرنك الشهير الذي كان يلتقي فيه بعض المفكّرين وينتقدون الثورة وأخطاءها...

يَقضي الشباب فترة في المعتقل ويتعرّضون للكثير من التعذيب بشتّى الأساليب حتَّى يتمَّ انتزاع اعترافات منهم بالعديد من الجرائم التي لم يرتكبوها، ثمَّ يتمُّ إجبارهم على العمل جواسيسَ داخل أروقة الجامعات لصالح أجهزة المخابرات.

لكنَّ النهاية هنا تاتي على شكل ثورة!
