Even though Agatha Raisin loathes Christmas panto, her friend, Mrs Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local am dram society in their festive offering. Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Wood, Agatha watches the baker playing an ogre strut and threaten onstage until a trapdoor opens, followed by a scream and silence! Surely this wasn't the way the scene was rehearsed. When it turns out the local baker had been murdered most horribly, Agatha puts her team of detectives on the case.

Story
A therapist moved into the village of Carsely, and Agatha Raisin hated her. Not only was this therapist, Jill Davent, romancing Agatha's ex-husband, but she had dug up details of Agatha's slum background. Added to that, Jill was counselling a woman called Gwen Simple from Winter Parva, and Agatha firmly believed Gwen to have assisted her son in some grisly murders, although has no proof she had done so.

Cotswolds inhabitants are used to inclement weather, but the night sky is especially foggy as Rory and Molly Devere, the new vicar and his wife, drive home from a dinner party in their village of Sumpton Harcourt. They strain to see the road ahead - and then suddenly brake, screeching to a halt. Right in front of them, aglow in the headlights, a body hangs from a gnarled tree at the edge of town. Margaret Darby, an elderly spinster, has been murdered - and the villagers are bewildered as to who would commit such a crime.

Reports of a haunted house soon have amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin snooping around, only to discover the victim of the haunting is a universally disliked old biddy on whom someone is playing a practical joke. But then the old lady is murdered, and, for Agatha - Miss Marple with attitude - solving a crime is much more fun than ghostbusting. Very soon she’s up to her usual tricks, involving the villagers, local police, and, naturally, her handsome new neighbour....

Publisher's Summary
Penelope Keith - who starred as Agatha Raisin in the popular BBC Radio 4 series - reads M. C. Beaton's entertaining murder mystery. Incomer Gloria French is at first welcomed in the Cotswold village of Piddlebury. She seems like a do-gooder par excellence, raising funds for the church and caring for the elderly. But she has a bad habit of borrowing things and not giving them back, so when she is discovered dead, poisoned by a bottle of elderberry wine, folk in the village don't mourn her passing too intently.
Parish councillor Jerry Tarrant hires Agatha Raisin to track down the murderer. But the village is creepy and secretive and the residents don't seem to want Agatha to succeed. Plus, Agatha's investigations are hampered by the emotional upset of finding her ex, James Lacey, has fallen in love with young detective Toni Gilmour. And now the murderer is targeting Agatha...

LOVE!
I am a big fan of this series. I listen to it constantly - in the gym, on the train, waking down the road, while I'm cooking - everywhere!
I'm sad I'm getting to the end. I love the character of Agatha Raisin I sometimes laugh out loud while listening. I recently watched the first episode of the TV series they made based on the books and it was awful. They changed so much is was barely recognisable. One of the best things about the audiobooks is the fantastic Penelope Keith. The woman is an amazing actress and a master at creating rh

Not the old Aggie we know
Any additional comments?
Having put up with some fairly lack luster plots and characters in recent Agatha Raisin novels, I had convinced myself that this new release would see the formidable caustic amateur sleuth back to her best in another 'whodunnit' that provides wit and charm, in what is M.C.Beatons, brilliant style. This was not the case, and what I found was a book that it s hard to believe is written only by the author herself. There are flashes of the original Agatha, but then a few pages later the reader finds themselves reading about an Agatha who is a pale comparison of her former fiesty self. I accept that a character as well established as Agatha, may be difficult to sustain, but this book reads more as an allegory to a supporting cast of characters than to the exploits of the heroin herself. For a seasoned reader it will be another instalment in the series, not the best and it certainly will leave you wondering whether Agatha needs a shot of adrenalin and a better editor, for new readers this will leave you wondering what the fuss was all about. Read it without expectation and it will be worth it, but only out of a sense of nostalgia for the old Aggie

Decent story but not my favourite
I've never read or listened to any of the other books in the series so not sure if that affected my experience. The narration was good and the story was okay, I felt like Agatha didn't really do that much detecting. I also found the added characters popping in a bit distracting, but that may be since I'm new to the series and don't already know them. Mostly enjoyed the book.

Utter Enjoyment
What made the experience of listening to Agatha Raisin: Something Borrowed, Someone Dead the most enjoyable?
Penelope Keith's narration was superb, making each character her own. The story itself was funny and really captured the foilbles of human nature as well the virtues. The book also has an easy listening plot. I really didn't want to stop listening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Agatha Raisin: Something Borrowed, Someone Dead?
Just loved the atmosphere that was created by the inhabitants of Piddlebury (hope that's the right spelling) Village. Also love Sir Charles's attitude to Agatha, just wish I knew how he really felt about her, they are so well suited. M C Beaton has managed to keep us guessing for quite a while now!
Which character – as performed by Penelope Keith – was your favourite?
Very hard to choose but Sir Charles, Mrs Blocksby and of course Agatha herself.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Often laughed out loud!!
Any additional comments?
These Agatha Raisin books just would not be the same for me if not narrated by Penelope Keith. She really has made the characters almost real to me and to hear a different rendition would not be the same at all.

Charming Series- prefer the hardcopy
I have been a fan of this series for many years. I don't mind the TV adaption although it's not the same Agatha. As much as I respect Penelope Keith I find her narration here irritating. The character voices are poor and it feels like I'm back in a 70s TV show. It's a huge let down making the whole listening experience tedious. Sorry Penny K, you are a national treasure but not for Agatha Raisin
