About this listen

Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power. It tells of four teenage friends, born in the tiny state of Judah about 26 centuries ago, but captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon. Daniel describes how they eventually rose to the top echelons of administration. Daniel and his friends did not simply maintain their private devotion to God; they maintained a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society antagonistic to their faith. That is why their story has such a powerful message for us. Society tolerates the practice of Christianity in private and in church services, but it increasingly deprecates public witness. If Daniel and his compatriots were with us today they would be in the vanguard of the public debate. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow?

I am very grateful to John Lennox for his insights into the Book of Daniel and his efforts to apply it to today’s cultural milieu for believers (and unbelievers alike). So very good! I would very much appreciate an ‘update’ with all the developments that have occurred in western society as I believe we have become a lot more ‘complicated’ in recent years. While the ‘new atheists’ are still there I suggest there is a whole new regime of ‘cultural aggression’ which Christians need to come to terms with from the ‘woke’ movement to ‘identity transactionalism’. How do we understand and engage with these and other ideologies and worldviews in a manner that is worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ and more importantly with the ‘folk’ who promote them? How does Daniel’s life and witness, his example show us the way in a culture saturated with relativism? I also commend the narrator who I found conveyed John Lennox’ meaning so helpfully and clearly! I commend to all.
