Publisher's Summary

The tyranny of the gods is absolute, and they are capricious, malevolent and almost all-powerful, playing cruel games with the fates of mortals for their own ends....

A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

A conspiracy to reach the heavens and take down the corrupt and ageing gods...who are already facing troubles of their own....

An epic that draws on the Greek mythology of gods and heroes, this new trilogy is a must-hear for fans of Dan Simmons and Madeline Miller alike.

Critic Reviews

"Utterly, utterly brilliant. A masterclass in how to write modern fantasy—world-building, characters, plot and pacing, all perfectly blended. Miles Cameron is at the top of his game." (John Gwynne, author of the Faithful and the Fallen series)

A fantastic first step into a brand new world!

Fantastically written, and amazingly preformed.
Miles Cameron has created an entire new world, mythos and Pantheon. If the quality of this series remains this high in the next few books, well this will be something truly special.

Almost poetic in its telling

How often do you wonder how much of the enjoyment is the writing and how much is the narration? Well if ever a book has been added to by a gifted narrator it is this one. Personally I'm a huge Steven Pacey fan and his work on the Joe Abercrombie books, but the narration in Against All Odds really does - at times - rival that work. The almost poetic nature of the spoken word adds a beauty to this story that I'm not sure is actually there as we plod through the story. This is a book of reflection and conversation. Yes there is action, but it's often chaotic and a bit hard to follow, while for the most part the conversations do eek out the characters and their motivations. Some characters if felt were fairly similar - the mercenary and the scribe for example, or even the wives of the sea captain - which made it a bit slow, but the narrator did their best to bring that to life. Overall the story is fine, the narration is great, but I'm not sure I'd rush to listen to Book 2 - though maybe curiosity will see me come back to it.
