What happens when we die?

Ten percent of people whose hearts stop and then restart report near-death experiences. Stories of lights, tunnels and reunion with late loved ones have been relayed - and dismissed - since ancient times. But when Dr Bruce Greyson's patients started describing events that he simply could not dismiss, he began to investigate.

In After, he shares the scientific revelations of four decades of research into the dying process. He has become increasingly convinced that dying is less an ending than a transition, the threshold between one form of consciousness and another. Dr Greyson challenges us to consider what these lessons can teach us about the relationship between our brain and our mind, expanding our understanding of consciousness and of what it means to be human.

This audiobook includes three bonus interviews with the author.

Everyone will get something out of this

If I had my way this book would be part of every school curriculum! More relevant and relatable than the bible!
Rather than narratives by individuals who have had an nde this book covers the whole story and how science can understand this phenomenon. Written by a psychiatrist who has studied it in numerous patients over many years, we get a very good picture of where this can lead us. Showing how the age old wisdom of every religion “Do as you would have others do to you” is what truly matters in life. There seems to be a real possibility that mortal death is not the end of our lives. I recommend it and hope you find it as interesting and uplifting as did I.

The narrator reads well but too fast. I set mine to 0.9% speed and that was then perfect.

A suggested model to place NDE experiences

In this book, Dr Greyson has compiled and analysed a large collection of NDE's, gleaned over several decades. He also explicitly searches for a metaphysical system into which can best accommodate this phenomenon.
He is forced to reject reductionist materialism, which necessarily must exclude NDE's. One has to chose between the veracity of one or the other.
However, he seems to have reluctantly settled upon a form of dualism, ruing the lack of a better model. But dualism has always suffered from huge philosophical difficulties as to how so called physical and non physical realities interact.
I would suggest that he - along with readers interested in inbedding NDE's within a sympathetic metaphysical system - would do well to explore a form of Idealism ("Objective Idealism") that in recent years has been advanced by the likes of Barnardo Kastrup (e.g. "Why Materialism is Baloney" , "The Idea of the World"...), Donald D Hoffman ("The Case against Reality"...) and others.
The nascent metaphysical system being developed within such works is an elegant and parsimonious system into which phenomena such as NDE's make a perfect fit.

Fascinating and life-affirming

It's okay to be comfortable with the unknown. It's reassuring that what's beyond death is something nurturing, all=embracing, and unconditional.

Expertly read by Sean Patrick Hopkins.

Scientific (yes, really!) book of 2021 in my eyes.

Theraputic

I've mentioned this book to people many times since finishing it due to finding it quite powerful and affirming. I'm not sure I would say the book is unbiased, and Greyson does not include much empirical data to back up his research, but there is something about hearing NDE accounts that is theraputic. The book isn't overtly religious or secular, and straddles the line quite well considering.
it isn't a book of individual NDEs like The Truth In The Light (my fave book so far on NDE), but more a musing on the subject based on years of qualitative data collection, which granted, we have little direct access to, save for the glimpses given. Nonetheless, it works as both an interesting introduction to the subject as well as working as a jumping off point for those looking for 'answers' for want of a better word.
I would classify myself as having a seesaw approach to life after death but this book has added a little more weight to the case for it. To be fair, I think the book leans in that direction, but not obnoxiously so. In any case, It is certainly fascinating whether it holds any deeper meaning for you or not.

This book may change your life

Detailing his research into the experiences of those who report NDEs, or Near Death Experiences, Bruce Greyson's book is remarkable. His skepticism is moderated by a sincere search for the truth, and as a psychiatrist the search for what can help his patients.

What he discovers over 40 years is a remarkable glimpse of a world in which love and compassion are the true foundation of all existence.

A work of real interest and beauty, I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for those who are finding their life difficult.

Great audio book I highly recommend

I found this book at a time where I felt I was drowning in my thoughts and feelings about the afterlife which really depressed me. But after this I realise we don't know the whole truth yet and with hope we all will find it eventually.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

I've read many books on the subject but this was definitely the best. Beautifully written and narrated, it tells the truth from a scientist's point of view and yet captured the most important lesson, love is everything.

A must listen or read

Absolutely fascinating from beginning to end. Brings great comfort and peace hearing the NDE accounts and knowing that great beauty awaits after our soul goes on. Having a scientist write this book gives the book weight as the concept of NDE’s are explored to the full.

Fascinating and very well written

Fascinating book and written very well. Bruce approaches the questions raised from a non biased stance and applies science wherever is possible.
This book will no doubt have a positive effect on how I view life moving forward and those around me.
