Publisher's Summary

The Sunday Times best seller.

By the star of Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm.

Amanda Owen loves her traditional life on her hill farm alongside her nine children and husband Clive. And, as listeners of her previous best sellers will know, every day at Ravenseat brings surprises. In Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda takes us from her family’s desperate race to save a missing calf to finding her bra has been repurposed as a house martin’s nest and from wild swimming to the brutal winter of 2018 that almost brought her to her knees. As busy as she is with her family and flock though, an exciting new project soon catches her eye....

Ravenseat is a tenant farm and may not stay in the family, so when Amanda discovers a nearby farmhouse up for sale, she knows it is her chance to create roots for her children. The old house needs a lot of renovation and money is tight, so Amanda sets about the work herself, with some help from a travelling monk, a visiting plumber and Clive. It’s fair to say things do not go according to plan!

Funny, evocative and set in a remote and beautiful landscape, this book will delight anyone who has hankered after a new life in the country.

Critic Reviews

"Amanda’s life is one of old-fashioned values, hard graft and plenty of love. She, like her life, is extraordinary." (Ben Fogle)

Terrible narration

Terrible narrator! Ruins the whole book, not an enjoyable listen at all.
I enjoyed reading the books, but she really ruined this for me now

Please write more like this!

I couldn't get enough of Amanda Owen's three books. I listened to them twice and was delighted to find more of her life with her family on the farm on social media. I am a devoted follower! The narration of Amanda's books is excellent. The descriptions of the farm and weather make me feel like a participant in her life. Please don't stop here, Amanda! I want to watch your babies grow up. Don't leave us hanging.

Another enjoyable trip to Ravenseat

I really enjoy Amanda Owen’s books but this one did feel slightly flat compared to her previous two, possibly due to so much being covered in the last books. There were less details about individual animals although Little Joe and Chalky stick out. She is as always unstintingly honest about life on the farm, the positives and the disasters. A lot of the book is taken up with the restoration of the family’s new investment house which although typically funny and informative I have to say I found a bit dull when it came to the search for furniture.
I really dislike Janine Burkett as a narrator and have stopped listening to the Vera Stanhope series as I find her reading breathless and girly. It suits a bit better with these books than the detective but conjures an image which isn’t like Amanda Owen at all. I would have much preferred listening to her read her own book to be honest but that’s just my personal view.

Life is too short

I have heard and enjoyed all previous Amanda Owen books. However having listened to this one for minutes (yes only minutes) the narrators affected sing song voice is so grating that I have abandoned it. I will buy the book and read it myself. A shame as I was looking forward to listening. I have considered if I should have given it longer but in this case I just know I could not live with that voice in my ear for several hours. Bet the book is good though!

Appalling narrator

A pleasant enough book utterly ruined by the appalling narration – Lesson learnt, always listen to the sample.

Great stories

This is a delightful book which takes the reader into the lives of the characters and brings one into the working heart of the Dales.
It was only spoiled for me by the narrator’s attempts at the accents of the characters. Surely the men don’t speak so miserably? Or perhaps they do!!

Love the stories

Well written tales. Only downside of the audio books: the squeaky voice to impersonate the children. Otherwise the performance is enjoyable.

Lovely book

Coming from the hills of Scotland it’s lovely to hear the Yorkshire version of our lives. The tales told in this book are wonderful, mixing a bygone age with modern farming. The only bugbear I have is the narrators version of the spoken Yorkshire men, she makes them all sound slightly deranged and not quite the full ticket, it gets worse as the book goes on which I found to be quite irritating, sorry.

Another great book by Amanda

We are really enjoying Amanda's books even though we got them out of order is easy to follow we listened to the first then this and now we are on the second book, both my wife and I find them easy listening during the second lockdown taking us both away from the isolation not being able to meet people and loved ones or visit places, which before was our weekly getaway, now it is through books, being dyseptic its easy and convenient and we both can listen together.
