In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood. By freeing yourself from your parents' emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you'll learn how to create positive new relationships so you can build a better life.

Critic Reviews

"Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem.... The book is impeccably clear.... This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject." ( Foreword Magazine)

really great book with a lot of useful information and helpful exercises. but it disregards those that have aspects of the emotional immaturity within themselves, implying that those people who are emotionally immature cannot change. I don't agree with this. it presents people as either emotionally immature or not, while I'd say that it's more of a continuum.

great and informative, but disregards one thing

A very empowering book clearly written. It should be a must read for everyone embarking on parenthood. We really need to be aware of our impact on future generations.

Very enlightening

Plenty of examples to understand each parenting style and coping strategies used. A very neutral approach to child neglect that made me understand my family problems.

I have never read a book so accurate

Stumbled across this book by accident during free trial.. Buying the book now so I can read it slowly and really delve deep and understand this subject. Explained so many things to me about my parents, my in-laws and my Aunt, but also previous work colleagues… The only thing for me was the narrator is so hard to listen to, made this whole process just so much longer and for me, her voice grated on me and I was constantly having to rewind and re-listen to it.. Hence why I’m buying the book now.. But really enjoyed the subject and so enlightening 😊

This book has pieced together so many unanswered questions about how my parents operate and how this in turn has effected me in the way I look at life! I am so glad I listened to this as my most recent book for my daily walks! Definitely recommend to everyone!

This was a smart book, I found the information valuable and the way each topic is set up and then explained makes it easy to understand. Highly recommend for anyone trying to rebuild themselves or better understand themselves once they have realised their parents are actually children in adult bodies.

Smart book, easy to understand but still powerful

I loved the way this book was structured and the ideas it presented. It was like a therapy session in a book

Actionable explanations
