Publisher's Summary

Are you trying to eliminate your anxieties and fears?

Are you fighting against yourself and your emotions?

Well, you should know that what you are cannot be changed, but you have to understand that taking awareness and accepting what you are living without hiding or lying to yourself is the only way you can act to change your life.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) helps people to open up to unpleasant feelings and learn not to overreact to them and not to avoid situations in which they are invoked. Its therapeutic effect is a positive spiral, where feeling better leads to a better understanding of the truth.

The goal of ACT is not to eliminate difficult feelings. Rather, it is to be present with what life brings us and to move toward valuable behavior.

ACT commonly uses six basic principles to help people develop psychological flexibility, such as:

  • Cognitive defusion: Learning methods to reduce the tendency to rectify thoughts, images, emotions, and memories
  • Acceptance: Allowing unwanted private experiences (feelings, thoughts, and stimuli) to come and go without fighting against them
  • The contact with the present moment: Awareness of the here and now, lived with openness, interest, receptivity, and awareness
  • The observing self: Access to a transcendent sense of self - a continuity of consciousness that is unchanging
  • Values: Discover what is really important to yourself.
  • Action taken: Set goals according to values and achieve them in a responsible manner in the service of a meaningful life.

The audio guidebook is organized extremely well.

ACT differs from DBT, MBCT, and MBSR in many ways. For a start, MBSR and MBCT are essentially manualized treatment protocols, designed for use with groups for treatment of stress and depression.

Not for practice

This book is better suited to writing an essay about the efficacy of ACT rather than learning it’s actual process. I found the mix if colloquialisms and formal language jarring. Additionally the narrator’s inappropriate intonation made it difficult to follow.
