Petrus Abaelardus, Sprachphilosoph, fahrender Scholar, Theologe, Mönch, Abt und schließlich sogar der Ketzerei beschuldigt, lebte von 1079-1142 und wirkte in vielerlei Hinsichten in einer Umbruchzeit. Mit anderen bereitete er neuartigen Methoden und Denkstrukturen den Weg, welche heutzutage als Scholastik bezeichnet werden. In diesen Neuerern nun aber die Speerspitze einer rein auf Vernunft basierenden Philosophie zu sehen, welche gegen die vermeintlich verstaubte kirchliche Lehrmeinung ins Felde zog, wäre eindeutig zu kurz gegriffen. Vielmehr existierte ein breites Spektrum zwischen Vernunft und Glauben, innerhalb dessen Abaelard seinen Weg des Intentionalismus fand. Dieser durchzog nicht nur seine logischen Abhandlungen, sondern Abaelard führte ihn auch in die Theologie und die Ethik ein, wodurch er nachhaltig die Gesellschaft erreichte.
