About this listen

They call her 'the gangbuster'.

The police force can be a tough place for a woman, but Detective Superintendent Deborah Wallace rose to the top with grace, humour and an iconic sense of style. In her incredible 36-year career with NSW Police, Wallace took on murderers and drug suppliers, and dismantled the state's most nefarious gangs.

Tenacious, perceptive and sharp, Wallace commanded a range of police crime squads, bringing order to the wild west of 1990s Cabramatta and busting criminal bikie gangs with Strike Force Raptor, until her retirement in late 2019. Her inner strength and empathy meant that she was a constant go-to for some of the state's toughest cases, and her poise and compassion earned her a special place in the lives and hearts of her colleagues - and the grudging respect of her criminal foes.

In Wallace's official biography, veteran crime writer Mark Morri brings to life the jaw-dropping true story of a police trailblazer and woman of force.

Captivating; a little bit annoying at times with the narrator’s mispronunciation of names, grammar and some words.

Soooo my first Audible book completed. Ya me! I’m very distractible so I’m stoked. This one was so interesting I woofed it down easily in 24hr period.

This is the tale of a major figure in the NSW police force’s sections that dealt with all manner of gang crime over the last 30 years or so.

As a QLD’er & a person who generally avoids the news on a regular basis, I found the historical finessing of the organised (gang) elements & the key criminal figures absolutely fascinating. It certainly helped to contextualise some major inexplicable social events such as the Cronulla riots, along with fleshing out the notions I had of the shadowy patterns of ethnically stratified crime in Western Sydney.

Author Mark, has done a fabulous job of a riveting historical account of Sydney’s (& NSW) gang landscape through the framing and at at times intimately focused lense of Deborah Wallace’s career. As we listen we are included in her journey through the ranks of Western Sydney police from the 1980s to 2020. Over her career, Deb was instrumental in creating strong & effective teams who were able to break up many of the terrifying gangs around Sydney. Mark has woven together a well balanced take that straddles Deb’s significant career achievements, while allowing us to learn about her character and personality from her own recollections & those of many who worked closely with her over her career.

A thoroughly interesting tale. I will be recommending it to my friends who like me love a good bit of Aussie crime & policing.

Deb Wallace, what an amazing woman! it's difficult to be the only woman in a male dominated environment and not only did you prove your worth you also were a wonderful role model to the young women that followed you.

My favourite book of 2020. I am very proud of the accomplishments Deb made to how police operate today. She did it her way with feminity rather than trying to be one of the boys with outstanding results

True crime lovers perfect book . Well woth it
