About this listen

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries....

This is entertaining and funny, with a unique magic system. Not the most complicated book, but it’s not supposed to be. I had a great time listening to this one!!

Lovely story

The young protagonist is delightful and Mona has the right characteristics suited for the story. Plot was good and loved the characters (however minor). Addressed over arching motifs and themes. Love T Kingfisher like always

Engaging yet heartfelt

A nice easy book to listen to - in the car, running errands. The story lines are easy to follow and somewhat predictable, which makes for easy listening.

A positive and uplifting listen

Was recommended this author by a lovely stranger at a book signing, and this is the first book I tried and I'm glad I did.
This was a welcome break from some of the darker fantasy I has just read.

While initially the idea of bread magic saving the realm was a funny and light-hearted tale for our fourteen year old saviour.
There were some more serious questions of the whole fantasy genre addressed in this book.
What is a hero, and should a small town every day person be forced to become a hero, and the toll it takes, because people in power fail.

Love this book. Thank you T Kingfisher

A brilliant little book
