About this listen

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries....

This is entertaining and funny, with a unique magic system. Not the most complicated book, but it’s not supposed to be. I had a great time listening to this one!!

Lovely story

The young protagonist is delightful and Mona has the right characteristics suited for the story. Plot was good and loved the characters (however minor). Addressed over arching motifs and themes. Love T Kingfisher like always

Engaging yet heartfelt

A nice easy book to listen to - in the car, running errands. The story lines are easy to follow and somewhat predictable, which makes for easy listening.

A positive and uplifting listen

From the consistent baking metaphors to the fantasy elements and the supporting cast. This was a must listen and I cannot more highly recommend it

Utterly Delightful

The concepts are cutesy with the food coming to life. Yet it opens with a death a truly unique genre mash up

Relaxing read

This is a great book, but it is definitely not cozy! There are some lighter elements (I love Bob), but also persecution of minority groups and war.
The narration was ok, but not great.

Great book, but very dark

It was a good YA storyline and overall enjoyable. Nothing too complicated and the magic was fun. Although probably not strictly a cozy story, it held several elements of it that allowed the book to be an uncomplicated enjoyment.

Cozy little fantasy YA

This was such a delightful story to listen to and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The characters were well fleshed out, and you can't help but love them. The tone, pacing, and themes truly made for a whimsical and heartwarming tale tied together by a great narrator.
Also, it's a bit hard to remember, but Mona is only a 14 year old girl!

Super fun story

This is a great story that has a fresh take on magic and doesn’t assume the main character gets on board with heroism after the first life-or-death skirmish.

Delightful story

Really brilliant for a story about someone who wants a simple life and is pulled to risk her life when corrupt adults puts everyone in turmoil.

The burden of being everyone only hope.
