About this listen

Want longer hair, whiter teeth, a smaller nose? Violet has a potion for that. Want to hex an enemy, make someone fall in love with you, or curse someone? Well . . . that will cost you.

By day, Violet is a supposed charlatan running a potion shop in New Orleans and catering to drunk tourists who want to take a walk on the wild side. By night, she's a Potion Master, a rare, magical being whose shop straddles the portal to Earth and Hell, slinging potions to magical beasts who only come out at night.

She's also the protector of both, a neutral being who carefully navigates the Accords between oblivious humans and the creatures who wouldn't mind snacking on them. Unfortunately for both sides, Violet is terrible at her job.

After the last Potion Master dies a horrible death and she's pulled out of anonymity by a handsome and super annoying demon, Violet's shop transforms and she's thrust into unwanted instafame. And not the good kind, either.

Suddenly, everyone either wants to date her, or they want to kill her.

And, honestly? Violet isn't sure which one is easier anymore.

This a fun, quick read with lots happening in this book and even more set up for future story arcs. I liked the bar setting and Violet's magic. Potion making of her calibre is unusual in a MC but provides fertile ground for humour and action. The found family trope feels central in this book and perhaps series and it was so well crafted. The pacing was fast, as you'd expect in a book of this length but everything tracked well. I liked the sentient daggers and hope to see more of them.

The narrator did female voices well but her male ones were a bit odd. Still a good listen though.
