Summary
Half-Fae Elessia could have had everything. Literally.
Since her magic allows her to compel anyone to do her bidding by merely looking into their eyes, the world was at her feet. But after a tragic accident, she is thrown into the Fae king's dungeons and forced to swear a blood oath to him, binding her to his service.
Five years later, she's living amongst humans in Ellow and has created a life for herself—as much as she can with the king's promise to call in his debt looming over her.
When he finally comes to collect, she is made to infiltrate the human elections to determine whether the current regent is involved in the strange things happening in the land of Fae.
With the promise of freedom from the king's claws, Elessia is determined to see it through. Liberty is within reach as long as she can keep the lethal Fae guard watching over her from eliminating her before she unearths the information the king seeks.
But as she grows closer to the brooding human regent and secrets begin to unravel, Elessia realizes greater forces may be at play. And she might stand before the choice between her own freedom and that of a nation.

The plot and worldbuilding, it has a few holes. I made it about three hours in and was going to quit, but one reviewer said it got better after chapter 50 so I set it to 1.7x speed and ended up finishing this book out or morbid curiosity.
WARNING This review contains spoilers but it's hard for me to explain my issues without revealing some of the plot.
So the incredibly horrible fae king, who hates any half fae/half humans with a burning passion, takes a half fae child (16 maybe), out of his touture dungeon, and said if you swear blood oath to obey me I let you leave to dungeon, and fae lands and go live on the human continent, all I need you to do is make a name for yourself.
So with no money, no resources and no further instructions our FMC takes the deal.
Five years later, in the land of humans that hate her, nearly as much as the ing does, the FMC owns several taverns and gambling establishments. Every couple of days the kings top general the 'death whisperer' checks in on her. How he gets back to fae and humans lands in this time, or why it's even nessesary isn't explained. Maybe for a later set up in book 2, but whatever.
So the fae king finally turns up and kind of details his nefarious plan, the human election is coming up, and she is to join the election, and during the election/trial process she is to get close to the current regent to find out what he knows about some ship disappearances and deaths of some important fae.
So OK the FMC Elessia can compel anyone to do anything, even against their own nature, if only she looks into their eyes and tells them to do it. The average person would say, hey as a business owner I could just request a meeting with the regent to discuss anything and I could just ask him what he knows and then make him forget all about it, and me and report back.
But no, its enter the trials, get the information, stand by the regent at the reading of the votes and then the King will free her of the blood oath.
The king has has the death whisperer best her into unconsciousness, leaving her to nearly freeze to death in the cold, just to let her know he is serious. Sure.
The book tends to get more confusing as it continues
While I thought his might be a trial book, by what it said about the election, but discovered this was not true, I'd class them more as experiences than trials. They took no knowledge, skill or ability of the competitors, and in the first trial they basically got drunk and slept for two weeks. It was during this trial that I sped up the narration to 1.7x
The FMC is also all over the place. Firstly she clearly states that she has no interest in men, then spends the book describing two of the male characters in great detail. Why even say that, if that was never going to be a part of her character origin or development, why not just let her look at the pretty people?
She also describes the death whisperer, the man who used his magic to make her move physically against her will, spied on her for five years, and beat her into unconsciousness and leaving her to freeze on a cliffside, as Grumpy.
I think I have a few words for him, and it's not grumpy.
Elessia also spends the entire book, not using her magic to find out the information the king wants. She spends heaps of time alone with the regent, spilling all her secrets to him, but not even getting out of her blood oath makes her use it.
Serveral times it seems that the human regent answers questions that Elessia thinks. I'm not sure if this turns out to be a thing later. But it annoyed me that a mind magic user didn't seem to notice it happening. I actually used KU to get the ebook to confirm.
There are way more big spoilery things that makes even less sense, like I know people tried to kill you, but we are the good guys. I can't tell you anything but trust me, nonsense, but you have probably already stopped reading this review.
This book is confused about what it is, or I am
