About this listen

Why is “fun” always so freaking painful?

Software engineer Brent Levine has always struggled with the life part of work-life balance, but to hold on to his new job, he’ll have to embrace his employer’s dreaded “staff enrichment” events. This year’s annual ugly holiday sweater party will strain his ambition to remain inconspicuous: everyone has to wear their sweaters upside down and converted into pants—a.k.a. “swants”.

At six feet eight, Brent has a hard enough time finding clothes that fit him the right way up. And while he’s an ace at coding, when it comes to handcrafts, he’s definitely at the far left end of the bell curve. Luckily, he encounters seriously cute theater customer Jonathan at the Goodwill. Jonathan offers Brent both an acceptably ugly sweater and his expertise in swants conversion. Attraction sparks on Brent’s side, but how can Jonathan be interested in a nerdy geek like him?

A Swants Soiree is a short and sweet opposites-attract rom-com featuring crafting catastrophes, suggestive sweaters, and an awkward introvert who meets his extroverted match.

Just the right amount of short and sweet!

Software engineer Brent Levine is a shy as he is tall—he’s six foot eight and he hates standing out! He also hates the compulsory fun of his firm’s annual ugly Christmas sweater party. To make things worse, he’s left it too late to buy a sweater and this year, everyone is required to convert their sweater into pants (aka “swants”). In desperation, he hunts through the local goodwill store and meets a very helpful theatre costumier, Jonathan. While Brent is quiet and awkward, Jonathan is warm, friendly, and creative, and soon Brent has his very own “69-santa” swants. But will Brent’s clumsy attempts to woo Jonathan just drive him away?

Another heartwarming EJ Russell short story with a nice amount of heart and humour. Both guys were sweet and relatable and I could sympathise with Brent’s shyness and his mortification at having to wear the attention-grabbing swants! I also thought this romance suited the short-story format well, nothing felt rushed or padded out. I also liked watching Brent come out of his shell and learn to appreciate the social aspects of his job—it was a great learning curve. 🎧 Voice acting legend Kirt Graves is always excellent and he breathed these characters to life perfectly!
