Different, dull and exciting

I like it. The rational zombie tells a story about you guessed it, a zombie with a functional brain. The whole story is going through the motions of the zombie apocalypse and it was kind of dull seeing a zombie rediscovering everything but it can’t be helped because we’re starting at the beginning. Not until the end did I get super excited to see what came next. Our rational zombie drove into a corner and fighting for constant survival became more than just a smart zombie and that’s what I was looking for in this entire book. Too bad it came to an end. Overall, I think it’s a slow start to a huge journey for the rational zombie. I say huge because there are still so many questions to be answered. Why is it rational, how do you cure something technically incurable? Was the cure actually a cure or did it only prevent it temporarily? So much potential to touch upon. I look forward to the sequel!

Honestly this was a unique take on the zombie apocalypse

Now I know what you’re thinking when you hear zombie apocalypse book. Either the MC is some retired special ops war hero who can single handedly take out hoarded of people while trying to get back to their family and getting them out of a “safe haven” just before it falls or is working for the government to get the doctor with the cure out of a fallen city. Or it’s about someone who isn’t quite qualified to lead a rag tag group of survivors but who the people choose to listen to as that person has some kind of plot armor that makes it so their insane plans always work. This story isn’t like that at all, the MC is a zombie. And not some silly zombie who just stumbles around and it becomes a comedy. No, this MC is actually rational, they lost a lot of what made them human, in fact they don’t even consider themselves human. However they are able to learn and grow by watching the surviving humans fight the dumber zombies. It’s a truly terrifying theory as I doubt anyone would survive an apocalypse where the zombies can pass off as humans if they play it right. I am not sure if I want a sequel or not honestly. I like how it ended, the story isn’t over obviously but it’s not exactly ended on a cliff hanger either. There was no magical “then everything went back to normal” ending (which I assume isn’t a spoiler since anyone who thinks a zombie apocalypse book will end with all zombies dead and all people immune is crazy). Inversely there wasn’t some “then everyone died” ending either. The story ended in a manner I can happily say closed most of the lose ends up nicely. I mean sure a few things were left up in the air such as why the MC seemingly did the one thing that could have caused them to be a “intelligent infected” (going off what we learn later in the book) but since the story isn’t about that but about the after effects of hat action I am happy to leave it where it is.

A well done non-human story!

I've read a lot of books where the main character is non-standard, and I must say that Virlyce does a wonderful job of it in this book. The plot progression is reasonable and honestly fun to listen to, and its a interesting new break to see the Zombie Apocalypse scenario from the other side. Infidelity worth a listen, especially if you enjoy seeing tropes with depth!

An Interesting Point of View

If you are one for horror "A Rational Zombie" by Virlyce is the perfect story to sink your teeth into. I've just made my way through it and I've gotta say, the perspective of a smart zombie is a fascinating one. Watching it overcome humans and learn from experiences has been like watching a new born take its first steps. It almost makes you forget that your cheering on an absolute monster. You get the occasional view of the humans in this apocalypse so you can see the consequences of the zombie's actions. Highly recommended for those looking for a good zombie story. Hopefully there will be a sequel down the road.

Spicy, with a chance of brains!

I’ve listened to a ton of zombie books, but the idea of a thinking zombie surprised me. I went for it and was not disappointed. Virlyce captured the Smart Zombies thought pattern and ran with it in directions I hadn’t considered before. She had me rooting for the cold blooded thing! Mare Trevathan did a great job with all of the voices and was very good at making them distinct enough so you could tell who was who and added ‘spicy’ personality to the dead. If you don’t like this book, you’re not a zombie fan. If you did like it, like me, you are one sick puppy! : )

Pls sequel and go ZOMBIES!!!

First off pls a sequel it was one of the best books I’ve ever listened to. I never thought I’d see the day I would cheer on the zombies or be so sad when big and agile others died. Amazing work just like all of her other books. The beginning is a bit slow but it picks up quickly

Excellent

I truly enjoyed this book. I have all of Virlyce's other books and I had been eyeing this one for a while. It did not disappoint. Definitely worth a read and I'd love a sequel.
