About this listen
Joseph Patrick Kennedy (September 6, 1888 - November 18, 1969) was an American businessman, philanthropist, and politician. He was the patriarch of the Irish-American Kennedy family, which included President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and longtime Senator Ted Kennedy. He served as the first head of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1934-1935 and United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom under FDR from 1938 to 1940. The following recording includes three audio clips: Kennedy's arrival in Britain (1938), his praise for the resiliency of the British people (1940), and a speech he gave in favor for keeping America out of World War II (1941).
