About this listen

It is 1864 when Lizzie Martin takes up the post of companion to a wealthy widow who is also a slum landlord. Lizzie is intrigued to learn that her predecessor disappeared, supposedly having run off with an unknown man. But when the girl's body is found in the rubble of one of the recently demolished slums around the prestigious new railway station at St Pancras, Lizzie begins to wonder exactly what has been going on....

Enjoyable writing style brought to life with complementary narration emphasising the separate points of view of the leads. There was a good mix of characters, mostly unlikeable but also typical of the social class of the time, which served a fitting contrast to Lizzie and Ross's personas. A well-rounded story that was easy to listen to. I recommend.

Enjoyable

I normally enjoy books by this author, but I really struggled with this one. I still listened to the end but often skipped many conversations & dialled the speed up. In the author's favour, I didn't guess the murderer!

Conversations, reflection & descriptions too long & drawn out.
