Compelling and poignant

The corruption of Magnus and its effects on all he meets is story telling at its best

Not as good as expected

Well written but the main character seemed too weak for the role of a spy. The choice of voice by the narrator may have had a negative impact as he sounded like a feckless halfwitt most of the time.

The Perfect Spy

I became invested in Magnus’ journey. Enthralled and scared to the very end. As fresh now as the first time read.

So brilliant

So brilliant that when I finished it, I went right back and started it again. The writing is great, as good as Dickens at times. The structure is complex as it shifts in voice and time, so it takes a while to work out what is going on. The chilling portrait of Magnus Pym's con-man father Rick, is clearly based on Le Carré's real con-man father.
Inspired me to go back to Audible and get all the Le Carré I can, though I dislike the author's reading voice. He should leave it to professional actors.

Fantastic

A very enjoyable Le Carré- a fascinating central character with deeper focus on a character than usual. Jayston reads wonderfully as always. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly Absorbing

This was a more complex plot than other Le Carre novels but just as absorbing. The flashbacks to the protagonist's youth and the gradual revelation of his complex relationship with his father and significant others in his life completely enveloped me in his chaotic world.

Tedious

This was the most tedious story. Normally a Le Carre fan. It was a struggle to get to the end. I persisted to see if it ever came together. I didn’t. It jumped all over the place, very little happened, no discernible point.

Dreary

I listened to this for a couple of hours and it went nowhere. Very dreary.
