Publisher's Summary

A classic Marple mystery, read by Emilia Fox.

The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Miss Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.' A childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare poor Letitia Blacklock? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out…

Classic Christie.

With excellent narration from Emilia Fox this classic Christie novel fairly crackles along. Excellent story with a delightful twist at the end. First class entertainment.

Fine reading of a splendid Agatha

This is a novel I read about fifty years ago, and had forgotten much of it, but unfortunately, I did remember who the murderer was, and all the Letty-Lottie confusion. However, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the audio book, with its terribly English characters like Colonel Easterbrook and Miss Blacklock. No-one is as good as Agatha in setting up a puzzle, with red herrings all over the place, and an unexpected conclusion - though she never pulls rabbits out of hats, ie she plants the Letty-Lottie business quite a few times, for readers to pick up vital clues. The reader is fine, and there is plenty of Christie-type atmosphere in the village where Miss Marple is so at home, though it's not actually her own village.

Jolly good listen.

Wasn't quite sure how Emilla Fox would go. So used to Hugh Fraser and Joan Hickson as the narrators however, it was pleasant listening. Good characterisation and the story is complex.
