About this listen

It should've been the happiest time of Lee Barnett's life. She was married to a man she loved and trusted, Harris Todd, and she was pregnant with her first child. But things quickly turned from dream to nightmare when Harris demanded a divorce. Rich, powerful and well-connected in their hometown of Charleston, USA, he was able to spin the court proceedings in his favour, leaving Lee emotionally and financially devastated. And then came the final blow: she lost custody of her beautiful daughter Savanna, who was only eleven months old.

Desperate to stay with her daughter, and fearing for Savanna's wellbeing if she were to be raised without a mother, Lee fled the USA, taking her baby daughter with her. All ties to their past were cut, as they travelled the world under aliases before finally settling in Queensland and living a happy and fulfilling life. Then one morning in 2013, nineteen years after they first disappeared and on the other side of the world, the FBI knocked on Lee's door.

Powerful, compelling and affecting, this is an unforgettable true story of a mother's love and willingness to sacrifice everything to stay with her daughter.©2019 Lee Barnett (P)2019 Penguin Random House Australia

In typical fashion there is a double standard when it comes to men and women

if a man did the same thing he would be a monster

I really liked this story. As an ex correctional officer from Bne Womens Correctional Centre it was great to hear all the positives the author talked about down to the kangaroos. the story was interesting and seemed an honest portrayal. Good narrative too.

Amazing story

I remember reading a little about this case in the media but the history of this case was unknown to me until I read this.
I was completely engrossed in the story of this woman's life.
It did however take me a little time to get used to the way some words were pronounced in this audio version.

Engrossing

i knew Alex (Alex to me, Lee to you) in Australia. To have pulled the wool over the eyes of so many for the love of YOUR Daughter Sam and Rhys.

Karma will follow Stephen and Shelly Schofield.

Once started I had to finish it. The narator is excellent and sounds just like Alex.

Just such a WOW story!

What struck me the most was the authors soft and gentle way in dealing with very challenging circumstances. Lee is a wonderful role model and somebody to aspire to be like ❤️

An amazing real life adventure

Well read. Listened intently and laughed and cried with the reader. Lots learned (particularly about jail). Thoroughly enjoyed!
