Fast paced, lots of action!
The publisher’s summary pretty much sums up the entire plot of this story with out giving anything away. Michael Wolfe and Nadia Picard are the hunted by their former handlers at the government agencies they had worked for. These are people they once knew and trusted and one of them is supposed to be dead. With the help of a few other people they are helped when they become the hunters to track down their would be assassins. This is a fast paced, taut globe trotting story with plenty of action. I’m looking forward to more in this new series. Paul J. McSorley does a fantastic job narrating. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

Gripping
This is a new author for me. The book is about espionage and intrigue. The book is well written. There are two protagonists in this story. Michael Wolfe retired from the Marine Corp where he was a sniper and from the CIA. Nadia Picard is retired from Mossad. I must say the story provided a great travel adventure as the story bounced back and forth between Missouri and various places in Europe. Somebody is trying to kill Wolfe and Picard. I could hardly put the book down. The author grabbed my attention right from the beginning of the story and held it throughout. I am definitely looking forward to more stories by J. C. Fields. The book is nine hours. Paul J. McSorley does a good job narrating the book. I have listened to McSorley narrate other stories and enjoy his skill at narration and the sound of his voice.

Awesome!!!
Initially, I thought it would be hard listening to McSorley voice a character that is not Sean Kruger. I quickly got over that nonsense because this story made me say "Sean Who?" pretty early. This story hit on all aspects of what makes a great book and an awesome start to a series - really good, good guys and really bad, bad guys. Michael Wolf is the guy you send in when the job is too difficult for the merely good. As ex-CIA, he's been called on a few times to preserve the US. Or that's what it seemed like. This wonderful cat-and-mouse was Michael's attempt, along with his love interest Nadia, to figure out that very thing. It was exhilarating. I have two regrets with this listen: 1) It only lasted 9 hours 2) Book two is not yet available.

WOW, WOW. WOW!!
First, let me say, if you are reading J.C. Fields, you are MISSING OUT. Second, I these characters are so stinking believable! I like the crossover of some of the characters from the Sean Kruger, however, the author does say they won't be around in the coming books with Michael Wolfe. Having them there brings a familiarity that I enjoyed. The mystery is solid and the characters are people I would not want to meet in real life (they make me nervous!). That being said, I am sure glad we have people out there protecting our country like that. I listened to the audiobook version of this book. Paul McSorley, dang! The more I listen to his work, the more impressed I am. I truly get excited when I get a new book from him. ESPECIALLY when he is doing one of J.C. Fields' books. These two go hand in hand. His storytelling catches me and won't let go. I even think I heard some new character voices in this book!?? Love how he is able to catch WHO these characters are in their voice and the cadence of their speech. Did I happen to say, I liked the book? Get it!

Riveting
I have listened to all of the Sean Krueger series and enjoyed every moment. I was thrilled to find out that the series has not ended, but in the meantime J.C. Fields has crafted a new series. Michael Wolfe is a retiree of the Marine Corp and CIA where he was a sniper. Nadia Picard is a retiree of the Mossad. Michael and Nadia were involved, but had gone their separate ways until someone tried to kill both of them in Barcelona. Since then, the two of them have been living off the grid “somewhere in southern Missouri”. Michael and Nadia are determined to find who wants them dead and so the action packed, cross-continent adventure begins. The books feels so familiar with Paul J. McSorley ‘s great narration and a few characters from the Krueger series playing a part. Loved, loved this first book in J.C. Fields new series and can eagerly wait for the next. The Story And The Narrator Drove Me Nuts.
First of all I need to say that most people liked the book and the narrator. But not me the story and the narrator drove me nuts. Audible offered this book for $4.95 and I was searching for a new author to try so I decided to go for it. This book was just awful The story line is really weak and it was pretty easy to figure out what was going to happen next before it happened. It also is full of character and verbal cliches, red herrings, and annoying character mannerisms and character backgrounds that are described again and again ad nauseam. For example, we are told numerous times when various characters mouths "twitched", or whenever one character uses a contraction ("I'm") as opposed to saying the two words separately. The story is also full of whoopes . . . In one scene, the main character needs to get into a house so he knocks out the town's power grid and then takes out the house back-up generator. Yet, when he enters the house we are told he hears the "gourmet fridge" running. Huh? In another scene, a character gets a text message on his phone even though we are told there is no phone service available. Various characters also make many VOIP calls to each other to discuss sensitive matters, yet VOIP is only secure when it's made over a secure corporate internet -- something hotel rooms typically don't offer customers and something a spy ought to know. There is also a scene where a high level CIA guy gets exposed, and even though they find he has numerous secret offshore bank accounts stuffed full of money and is thought to have engaged in illegal activities, his bosses only demand his resignation. The author also doesn't take the time to describe why certain technologies are being used or how -- at a high level -- they are supposed to work. Rather, we are told Character A is using it and whalla it works, end of scene. Either the author is just being lazy, or he didn't take the time to educate himself. This also applies to certain guns characters use -- the author just describes the gun model and assumes the reader should know this is the type of gun best used for the situation at hand. For example, regarding the taking out of that back-up generator, the character does so using a .50 cal sniper rifle . . . talk about overkill. As for the narration, foreign voices aren't this narrator's strong suit, nor female voices, nor pronunciation of foreign words. Even the American voices come across as pretty weak, and one sounded like a very bad Jack Nicholson "Chinatown" imitation.

I really enjoyed the group of characters that are spread throughout this book. Each felt very different from the others and were enjoyable to get to know. The story kept moving, kept me guessing, and had some very nice twists and turns before it all came together. The performance was good, and i look forward to more from this author! Great First Installment
I’d say J.C Fields did a great job at making a captivating story to kick off a new main character for a book. I’m excited to see how these characters develop in this world J.C has created. I’ll be happily waiting for the next book! I also wanted to add Paul McSorley did an amazing job with his narration and making these characters come to life. I hope to hear him in the future for the next story.

Trust me, you’ll want to meet this Wolfe!
When you see that J. C. Fields has a new release, AND that Paul J. McSorley is the narrator, you just HAVE to drop everything and start listening! This is the start of a new series, with a couple of characters from Sean Kruger's books, and is absolutely riveting! 2 yrs ago, someone tried to kill former CIA operator, Michael Wolfe, and his ex, a Mossad agent, Nadia. The pair have been living off the grid since then, but Michael is ready to find out who wants them dead. So begins the action packed, cross-continent adventure for Michael, Nadia and a few familiar friends. If you love covert ops books, then this one is for you! The book is well written and the narration is excellent! I’m looking forward to more in this series. I accepted a complimentary copy of this book and this is my unbiased review.

Answer the. question, Ksvin.
When Michael saw who his target was, he knew it was a trap. The woman sitting in the cafe was Nadia, Mossad agent and former girlfriend. He jerked her out of the way just in time for the sniper's bullets to miss them both. But who wanted them dead, and why? So they ran and hid in the safest way they knew how: they faked their deaths. But eventually they would have to face up to those questions when, two years later, it became obvious that someone suspected they were still alive and wanted to remedy that. This is an intense and intriguing thriller which takes the reader with the main protagonists across parts of America and Europe in their search for people, both dead and alive, to ensure their own personal safety. Whilst the character of Wolf steadily emerges, that of Nadia is less well defined: she is very much the secondary half of the double act, treated like the little woman to be told what to do, rather than consulted over life and death issues. Which seems unlikely, given that she was Mossad trained and, despite their long and very close association both in working and personal situations, Wolf was not even aware that she, like him, was a trained sniper. Plus his constant comments to her about her use of reductions in her speech really annoyed me; I can imagine what it would have done to a feisty, real life woman. But these are minor grumbles. The story keeps the reader guessing as it twists and destructively meanders through a cast of spooks and politicians, removing some of them along the way. Who can be trusted? And, again, why were they so badly wanted dead? Good plot, well written. And also well read by Paul J.McSorley, who delivers with a fitting subdued passion, his pleasant on the ear voice gives individual protagonist voicings, though occasionally these are not easy too differentiate in conversation. Over all, though, a fine performance, well suited to the book content. My thanks to the rights holder of A Lone Wolf, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was a thriller which kept me engrossed, and guessing, the whole time. This is the first of a new series and I very much look forward to continuing the journey with Michael Wolf and his wife.
